1. Cops are human beings like everyone else.
2. Since Cops are accorded a certain amout of power, they should be held to a higher standard when they are proven to have committed a crime.
3. If the African American community riots they will only end up destroying their own community and serve as justification for what some racist already believe.
4. The poster who suggested targetted killings is really dumb and should be considered a candidate for culling.
5. Euro posters that claim this only happens in the US and nothing racial ever happens in their society are more deluded then they claim Americans are.
6. This case could be used for good if people will get off their ivory tower and actually hold judgement until officials have time to react. The officiers can't be tried any faster then anyone else in the criminal justice system. If you jump the gun and proclaim your judgement before everything is brought to light then you are more of a problem then bad cops or gang members will ever be because you undermine the system more. You only know what you are allowed to see by others, no more.

Speer, the reason I said the cops need to have more respect for us is because many of them don't. There is a sense of us and them betwen cops and the public. I'm sure you're well aware of the Blue Wall of Silence. The culture of machismo is very powerful among the police. When I was at a union training meeting, I met several police officeres who told me stories about police contempt for civilians.

I'm a big believer in community policing, if its done correctly. The police need to be reintigrated into the community as well as be reminded who their bosses ultimate are.

Now, my view of cops may be tainted by what I've seen and experienced and been told. I also had ***hole cops in my small town when growing up. Had to deal with the Chicago PD, and now have to deal with the 8th deadliest police force in the country here in Jacksonville.

I live in inner-city Philly so I know **** obviously. I mean I know how a lot of police are either incompetent bastards who only seem to like to bother teenagers or are over-zealous and brutal. I know that most people are very suspicious of the cops and don't particularily like them. I'm one of these people, too, I dont like cops cause I haven't seen them do much constructive in the past, but maybe i'm niave and feel that most of them are good people. I want police to be re-integrated as a respected part of the community but I want to achieve this via something a bit different than your means. I dont blame most cops, I guess. Aside from the racist, truly bad ones, I can understand why a lot of cops might be contemptous to civilians, because they don't see all the good people. All they know are the criminals who seem to multiply and come back on the streets again and again and frustrate them from their job of serving and protecting.

The thing here that is a problem with this incident are the L.A. Mayor's and Mfume's posturing and how they are asserting the cop's guilt. This is only going to hurt come trial time, as the cop's lawyers will have a field day with the idea a fair trial is impossible now. It will end up being a fiasco like the Rodney King trial was.

The demogogues need to shut up and let the law run its course, and THEN they can get their mileage out of it. Until then, they are jeopardizing the entire case against the cop.

I'm having a hard time believing that any evidence which I have not yet seen in this case will be sufficient to keep that officer from being convicted of assault. That said, the Mayor and those marching to the police station chanting "No Justice, No peace!" are doing more harm than good for the exact reasons Tingkai mentions above. I realize that African Americans are reasonably more suspicious of the criminal justice system, but in this instance they are potentially creating a self-fulfilling prophecy. Riots tend to set African Americans way back in terms of race relations with all other Americans, and have been the catalyst for much of the decline and stagnation in inner city neighborhoods.

I think that the police of all people have to be held to a higher standard. Yes it's a very tough job, and dangerous. But there is no one in the criminal justice system who is more in the public eye than the police, and they have to set an example for the rest of us to aspire to. If that means that we have to fire a lot of officers and pay the good ones a lot more, then so be it.

It will be interesting to see what happens in the aftermath of this attack. The black community in LA has done a lot of work to repaid the damages of the King riots. Hopefully, that work will not be destroyed.

The problem with this case is that:
1. The media is making it a race issue

I've seen worse happen on COPS to white people, yet where's the outcry?

2. You are only seeing one side of the issue

The TV media is completely sensationalizing this issue. According to reliable newspaper sources which REPORT news and don't SENSATIONALIZE news... the 16 year old youth was combative and lunged at officers before the camera started rolling. The officer in question had a 4 inch gash behind his ear from a punch the kid threw.

Was the slam into the car a violation of brutality laws? Yes!
Should the cop be punished? Yes!
Was the kid a complete victim? No!
Is this a race issue? No!
Is the media sensationalizing the issue? Yes!

One of the things about these incidents is that they seem to occur while the "suspect" is in handcuffs. If you're gonna beat the crap out of a "suspect" do it before you handcuff em - then you have a better chance of claiming self defense

I don't know if someone has claimed that but I can testify that police brutality is alive and well in Italy. See at what happened last year in Genova at the G8 and before in Naples.

Zimbabwe's independence came in 1980, less than one generation ago. All land aquired prior to 1980 was stolen by a white minority government. Any white person sitting on a farm in 1979 stole that farm from Africans. In some cases the land may have been stolen originally in 1930 but guess what - buying property known to be stolen (or receiving such property) is a crime in every nation I can think of. So yes, the vast majority of white farmers in Zim are thieves.

There's a video from a nearby store that might shed some light on this case, but it's currently being "investigated" in a lab according to CNN.

However, one thing is clear. After the guy was in handcuffs, there was no reason nor any excuse to hit him, gashes or no gashes.

I don't think it's a race problem, just an overly PO'ed cop issue.
