And it's guaranteed for every policy you have, there's a whacko group that strongly disagrees. And when you're strong enough and big enough that your policies matter, they get mad.

After examining every capital punishment case passing through the appeal courts between 1973 and 1995 its lawyers found that seven out of 10 death sentences were reversed because of serious error in the original trials.

To its authors the study suggests that America's capital punishment system is breaking down under the weight of its own mistakes. They point out that an appeals process burdened with the task of catching so much error is hugely expensive. Also it takes an inordinate amount of time.

Clearly nearly 70% of America's 3,700 death row inmates should never have been sent there. And although not more than about one in 10 will ever be executed, the wrongly sentenced are having to wait for anything from 10 to 18 years to be told of their fate. That's not unusual, and it is certainly cruel.

I fail to see anything mentioned that suggests that waiting on death row is any more cruel and unusual than standard Max Security prison.

This is getting really, really pathetic, Mark.

You're not even citing articles to support your original statement.

Now you're citing articles which are supposed to make us think a trial is flawed because the DEFENSE only had 1 witness or something? wtf?

And if they are found to be wrongly convicted, they will be let off free. You have just shown that there our Justince system is not perfect (and we know that no EU country has these types of problems). That fails to show that Innocent people are routinely executed. Unlike many other nations, our prisoners have chance after chance after chance to show that they are innocent after they are convicted. We do not execute people lightly.

And yes, it is not governmental groups who are always doing the fighting for the criminals, but that just shows that our people are active in the process (As they should be).

MarkG, you are showing nothing, None of these posts even suggest that someone was wrongfully executed. All it shows is that the US justice system sometimes makes mistakes, but that there are checks that counteract those mistakes (always before they get finalised!!).

The only they I can see your posts arguing for is for no prisons or justice system in the US at all. That idea is laughable, but if you are arguing for it, at least say so.

canada is anti-dp

quote:
- Contrary to predictions by death penalty supporters, the homicide rate in Canada did not increase after abolition in 1976. In fact, the Canadian murder rate declined slightly the following year (from 2.8 per 100,000 to 2.7). Over the next 20 years the homicide rated
fluctuated (between 2.2 and 2.8 per 100,000), but the general trend was clearly downwards. It reached a 30-year low in 1995 (1.98) --the fourth consecutive year-to-year decrease and a full one-third lower than in the year before abolition. In 1998, the homicide rate
dipped below 1.9 per 100,000, the lowest rate since the 1960s.

- The overall conviction rate for first-degree murder doubled in the decade following abolition (from under 10% to approximately 20%), suggesting that Canadian juries are more willing to convict for murder now that they are not compelled to make life-and-death decisions.

Your last = is wrong. It misses this result, the system checks many many many times to make sure that the person is guilty (especially for those on death row, they have many more appeals than anyone else), it catches the innocent person sentenced, and then they are let free. No innocent person dies.

Your statements are no different then

the system makes mistakes = the system sentences innocent people = innocent people get punished in prison

oh, that means that we should never send anyone to prison, that is so logical
