Here you have a sample of improved metropoly. It includes a railway, a railway station, a highway, and a bridge. The idea is to put these things in every metropoly. (I want to improve the contrast of the railway station a bit more).
The problem is the following. Metropolies appear in the game when you build hospitals (Sanitation). It's almost sure that you have already discovered the Steam Engine, but maybe you have not coal and iron. In this case, you can suppose that your minimal amounts of them are enough to put a railway only in metropolies and surroundings...
But, what's about the highway? Cars are supposed to appear with Mass Production or Motorized Transportation, and there is a gap of turns...
Is it bad or it does not matter? Any better idea?
(Railway and highway are "cut" in the image because of the edition of the screenshot to fit in 800x600, in the game they look right).

I have improved the railway. You are right, it was not good.
This screenshot keeps the detail level used in the game.
Perhaps the background colour under the railways (a mix between grey and purple) is not good enough...

Here is a temporal solution for file "g-med.pcx" until final version is released.
This file will unzip to a bmp file. So, you have to convert it to pcx using any of the well known conversion applications. The reason is that the compression of bmp files is better, and so, it was the only way to make it fit into 500kb.
Use only 8 bits of colour in the conversion, otherwise the file will be ruined.
(Besides, there is a small black area in the top. It was also needed to reach the 500kb limit. But, believe me, it is imperceptible).
Any more comments about the new stuff for metropolies? If you like them, I will substitute old metropolis files by these new pictures.
I hope the final version of the mod will be released on Monday, with the files for towns.

As you can see in the post 3 above mine, the buildings in the city are all a brownish color. I have messed around with the pallette, and created new ones. While I was at it, I made -sml version, though they may not have any use (I just got bored)
Anyway, I put all the files from this thread into one zip, with my editied files, and uploaded it to my web server. The download link is below:

File Size: 5.5MB
Enjoy

How did you do??? Did you keep the colour limit at 256 (8 bits)? Otherwise, they will not work in the game... (I know it because I tried)
Very Interesting!!! Tell me more...

What I want to do with the x-sml.pcx files is to keep almost the same picture than with 7-12 cities, but reducing damatically the radius...

What i did, was combined many of the colors in the pallette. If two colors were really close to each other, I would combine them, and gain one color spot for the town graphics. After combining several colors, I ahd enough to make the towns colorful. I maintained the 256 color mode the whole time, and I kept the 2 transparent colors in tact. I have tried them out in the game, as a matter of fact I have screenshots of my new ones working in game so I have proven to myself that they work.
I have made a template file in Photoshop 7 that does all this work for me, so when you get another workshop, post it, and I will post my versions within 20 minutes of my downloading the workshop file.
Glad you like it. Keep up the good work. The city view is one thing that FIRAXIS is not allowing us to edit as much as we want, but that wont stop us from making it look better than before.

ok No matter how hard I try, I cannot get the size below 4.91 for the modified files. I fear I will be forced to upload them one by one. Is that alright? (May take a page or two)

At that site, you can download the modified files one at a time. As files are modified, that site will be updated. The files on there are not in any comrpessed form, but will be shortly.

Player1:
Is that what you wanted? the ability to download each file seperately so the chance of download failure is minimized?
I will check in from time to time. I must admit that I hang around CF' more than here, but certain threads keep me coming back.

In this post you have the 4 "workshop" files I have made:
- workshop.bmp: Metropolies.
- workshop2.bmp: Cities.
- workshop3.bmp: Towns.
- railroad.bmp: Metropolies with highways and railroads.
railroad.bmp is supposed to substitute workshop.bmp
Regarding towns, I tried to make them so that they fit perfectly inside the city walls...

ok I have updated both sets.
Here you can download them seperately
or a zip containing them all
I think I used the metropolis overlay in the last ones, if that is so then you will only need to re-download the Town and City ones (MED and SML).
The buildings look really cool, havent tested in game though. I would like it if someone could verify that they work in game.
Have fun

I think that metropolies could be done with railway.bmp instead of with workshop.bmp (so, workshop.bmp would not be used). It could make cities and metropolies much more different between them, and metropolies would have a kind of "modern flavour". What do you think?
