Finally, in order to show you that it's true that grassland background file for 7-12 cities is done, you have an example of american middle age city:

(Background files for 7-12 cities in plains, desert, and snow can be downloaded from the previous page in this thread.)

(Besides, there are also more screenshots in the previous page.)

Took me a while to figure out how to unzip these.

There are some programs for splitting the files.

But I just don't remeber any one them.

If I can help...
I used a freeware program (under GNU licence, to say it exactly) that I find small and smart (IMHO).

STEVE'S FILE SPLITTER v. 1.4
(c) 2001, by Steve D. Perkins

I bet anyone can find it on his/her favourite download site, I just point you at its home site: Steve Perkins' site.

BTW, it's ready as a Windows application, but can be adapted to run under Linux (Ok, not useful for PTW without a Linux version, still you can use the Splitter as a general tool.

Until I try this application, I give you the second "workshop" file. This file is the basis to make the 7-12 population background files. If you want to use it to create the missing file (grassland background), it's very easy to copy and paste the picture into the original g-med.pcx... Just be sure to make the right down corner to coincide in both files...

I think the round pancake looks a bit silly...

Especially in the desert pic. But the last american pic (in the forest with remnants of city walls) looks pretty good though...

Ismailov (and player1),

Your graphics are great !

I shall stop playing this game until you've finished this project.

Just a note IMO smaller class cities should be including more trees, desert, snow etc. and fewer buildings and therefore should not look exactly as large as a big city.

Keep up the excellent work !

I think not just the city-view implementation is the best in Civ1-CivNet. The multiplayer is the most enjoyable with CivNet IMO (all of you like multiplayer should try it).

Guys, the work is near to be finished! Now I'm testing some possibilities for towns (1-6 population). A very simple first approach consist in substituting X-SML.pcx files by X-UNCLEAR.pcx files (for instance, g-sml.pcx by g-unclear.pcx). The unclear files are available in your art/city view/backgrounds folder, so, in this case, no download is needed

However, I would like to make some specific files for 1-6 towns. As player1 said, drawing crops is possibly not a good idea (civ3 uses skyscrapers in towns!). So, 1-6 background files will be like 7-12 files, but with smaller radius.

(An example of using the "unclear" files is the following)

Ismailov, I find your work very interesting, but still it is a bit confusing to follow your development and current files.

I understand you are still working on the mod, but would you be so kind to write a few new posts with:
- a fresh summary of the mod
- a fresh bunch of screenshots (no "see post 5 in page 3", please)
- some direct link to downloadable files "ready to use" (just ask the moderator to publish the file on Apolyton library, as version 0.9 if you consider it still a work in progress)

Thank you in advance

Adm.Naismith, I think you are right. An index is needed.

Last versions of files:

- Filler buildings (files with pics of new buildings):
page 1, post 1.
- Background files for Metropolies (12+ pop):
page 4, posts 12, 13, 14, and 15.
- Background files for Cities (7-12 pop):
page 6, last posts.

However, at first post in page 1 there is always a fresh index of the files...

I'll try to post fresh new screenshots today or tomorrow...

By the way, one suggestion about 7-12 cities.

As far as I have seen, you drew them with same radius as 13+ pop cities.

You could made them with a little bit lower radius (but it's not bad the way it's now too).

Since background trees/snow/plains overlap with some background buildings.
Radius same as "flat space" in backgound file would be OK.

But, if you have no time, it's fine as it is.

Thanks for your effort and help Ismailov. I'll still like more a direct link, e.g.
Background files for Cities (7-12 pop) post, but I can't really help you (you should modify your post, I'm not allowed to change it). If you have any doubt about command to use, feel free to ask to me.

A single, complete file IMHO is also a must, for casual visitors of the thread, as I am. A link from regular Apolyton Directory should do the job to avoid size limits. In this thread MarkG ordered:
quote:
HAVE A BIG FILE OVER 500K? Mail it to gramphos@apolyton.net
- so I suppose is the right way to go.

On a side note, I like your
last screenshot to avoid the unrealistic "round" shape of city borders

So, after looking at all the screenshots, there is alot this mod changes, and I also noticed that there are about 30 some zip files posted in this thread.

Does the zip on the first post contain all the other smaller changes, or do you have to go through the thread and download every zip you see?

As I said a few posts before, the only files you have to download (latest versions) are:
- page 1, post 1.
- page 4, posts 12, 13, 14, and 15.
- page 6, last posts (grassland file still missing, due to max space limitations).

I REALLY want to gather them all in one only zip file, but I prefer to wait for the last files -backgrounds for towns- to be done. I hope next week the mod will be finished... I don't want to ask the Apolyton guys for doing it until it is (almost) the last version.

player1: yes, it's not good that the size of pics are the same in metropolies and cities. If I could, I would like the improve a bit the metropolies pics including a railway station and a highway. I'll do it if I have time... I think my girlfriend is going to kill me if I spend much more time in "drawing houses"

That was "do it by yourself" file.

I suggest that Imsailov mails this file to you.

P.S.
Although it could be handy to separate it in several files.
(one for buildings, one for 13+pop and one for 7-12pop files).

It would be pain to download the same thing several times (especialy with slow 56k connections), just because of one PCX file.

OK I am starting to see how this was made. I downloaded the workshop file, and basically you just paste that onto the old one right? I did notice however that the overlay lost much of its "color" when pasted over some of the old ones. Since I love detail, I will attempt to fix these as I make the G one

New Question: Did you have plans to make X-sml.pcx files? It would seem weird that small cities would have a large poulation, as the overlay suggests.

I have used your overlay and placed it on the originals, and used a different pallette so that the colors remained vibrant.

If you want, I can post a link to them. I made the SML ones too, even if they wont be used.

GIDustin, if you have gathered them all, put a link, it would be great! It'll make easier to download the mod. Regarding files x-sml.pcx, wait for me to develop them... And regarding g-med.pcx, I think I know now a way to post it here, I will try late. If it does not work, I'll send it directly to you...
