Received back from Cort Haus:

quote:
RE: Monkey Land

Yes, friends, Monkeyland is yours to settle as per our pre-war agreement

As for fearing a Monkey attack - I don't know what they'd do, but they can't do much while we have their forces pressed back in the south.

Regards,

Cort

So, they don't see any problem that we've overlooked, and they're well-aware of the pre-war agreement. We need to decide whether or not we want to incorporate their city into our pattern (unless we've already decided). The only thing I'll say on that is, if we decide to disband it, we don't need to do so until we're set to get the ivory into the trade network the same or next turn.

That confirmation is a good thing to hear.

As to the Ivory city, I think we should decide on this, and inform CoD quickly. Because if it will be disbanded, it would make no sense for them to build structures there. I think we need to remove it, to have a better pattern.

They did not put the city on the coast, and neither did they allow a coastal city. Meaning, considerable income would be lost by leaving it there. Note, that leaving their city in allows for 7 new ones, while replacing it makes that 8, and keeps the patter more symmetrical, netting a nice place for the FP.

If you mean the "do it fast" thing, I am just trying to be nice to our alliance partner.

Situation update from Cort Haus:
quote:

Hi Modo,

Monkey are down to 3 cities on the ice. We've sent a couple of horses west to force the two cities there to be disbanded, which will just leave Whale Song. I expect Monkey will retreat through there to the mountain to defend their stack.

We have a settler with us. If they fortify on the mountain we'll build a city next to them so they can't heal and we'll wear them down with cats.

Back home we can start upgrading our spears to muskets next turn. We'll have 10 Muskets, 10 LB and 10 Cats there, currently guarding the homeland, but we could send them south when they're ready to assist the Great Reckoning.

And an update on CoD.

Cort Haus wrote on 10-03-2005 00:39:
Hi Modo,

I just notice that Whale Song, Monkeys last remaining city is on a hill, so they might hole up there instead of the mountain where we could build a city and stop 'em healing.

The CoD stack is 887 of Whale Song (from memory), and I don't think they have anything out west. I reckon Monkey have got at least 23NM (incl 2 elites), ~20 cats and maybe 20 archers too. Are you any good at setting up sims?

Now that Tabemono have finally kicked off Over There, it might be safe to start bringing CoD's 2nd army south (10 Muskets, 10 LB, 10 cats). Perhaps we should even wait for it to get to the front before attacking - but that would be around 12 turns.

Any thoughts?

-Cort

We have moved our stack east, to get the other two cities. It seems Monkey did not want to engage both of us at the same time, and we are anxious to get some action. Once the cities are gone (and if no Monkey army spotted), we will proceed to Whale Song. This looks like a 7-8 turn journey at the moment.

It is your call whether you want to take them on without waiting for us. Personally, I would keep the second army as a reserve (at home), to make sure no nasty surprises happen.

We have a fresh Embassy with Latin Lover (you can thank or kick me for this). We know they are in GA, and 4 turns from Sistine's (or any other wonder, should they switch). Now, my question is: who should know this besides us, and what do you think they can pay? I assume we give the info to CoD, I am asking about others. I attached the embassy screenie in this post (link).

We should probably send a message to CoD about all things happening right now. Here is a proposal. It is not obvious to me what to reveal, and what to keep secret, so comments are more than welcome. This has not been sent yet:

quote:

Hello Cake or Death

We now know for sure, that the western peninsula is Monkey-free. We will proceed to Whale song.

Last turn we made an Embassy in the Latin Lover capital. The information about their status will be sent to you soon.

As the time seems right, we decided to try and get a wonder. A Palace prebuild is being made as we speak.

The new southern lands will need to be improved, so our Workers are beginning to walk south through your territory. If they should take a specific route, please tell us which one. Settlers will follow later.

Another issue concerning the south is your city of Tuskany. It seems the place is pretty awkward, messing up any sensible city patterns there. Would it be possible fo you to (re)move this city at some point (i.e. when our Settlers are ready to claim the area)?

There is a place on our border, which is unclaimed, and nobody here seems to know the reason. We tried looking in our diplomatic archives, but there is no info why no city has been built south of Witch Village. Do you know anything about it? Would it be bad, if we placed a city at Witch Village 223, or at Witch Village 233?

Last but not least, the Holy Grail (the real one) has been found, as you know from the diplomacy last turn. We will present it to the rest of the world as soon as we get Astronomy.

Sent the above message to CoD.

And sent this to Kloreep. He is a member of Tabemono, right?
quote:

We have noticed you too decided to have some action...

And, by a weird accident, we made an Embassy with Latin Lover in 430 AD. Which just happened to provide us with some information about their current status.

The question is, would you be willing to pay for that informationand if so, how much? You would get a screenie of the LL capital after establishing the Embassy, or a detailed description thereof (whichever is "legal"). What say you?

Cheers

Good timing! LL just declared war on CoD and Python, it seems. I believe it to be to stop us trading with their continent, including their enemies, who probably have Astro. We've just got a nice hit of war joy, which our heavily-stretched economy can certainly appreciate. I doubt they are about to invade, what with Tabemono chewing them up.

quote:

Which one? I was considering the benefits of the Great Library. No one else will likely consider it, and if Over There are getting Edu, Astro, Chemistry and who knows what else, it could pay off nicely. Am I right in thinking that as long as you avoid Edu, you can get techs beyond it if available when the Great Lib is built? You probably had another wonder in mind, but I could get it in 17 turns in Swindon.

Probably a line straight down west of Swindon, the route your guys are taking now. There's a tile at Corinth23 I keep forgetting to mine, so just avoid that one until it done please.

Yeah, we can move it when needed, and eventually leave the site to you. Can you get a colony/city on another Ivory soon so we can both have one?

Fine. Is WV233 OK? New Plymouth was banking on the Wheat.
I was looking at putting a city on Silkfest111 and suggesting you took a site on the SE coast of the peninsula down there, east of Seige Perilous.

Are you researching? I've been saving up for musket upgrades, and now a bit more for rushing an Aqua for the Palace Jump to the SW, but I wasn't sure what research road to consider. Maybe some diplo is needed to see what the other teams are researching and but tech. If two rival teams have a tech for sale, it's possible to get a far better price than researching it.

We have just started one not long ago, so it is still over 30 turns. This is a gamble based on the tech situation (many wonders available or becoming avilable soon) and our almost-too-big-to-support army. We simply can spare a city to try it, and even with a late start, it still has good chances. Still time before we need to pick the actual target.

Yes, the Great Library gives you everything that is available when you get the wonder, including techs past Education. It is extremely powerful if you can afford to delay getting Education.

quote:

Cool.

quote:

It seems we would need Cathedrals anyway, and the luxury is not that crucial at the moment (would not help the 10% lux). It would be nice, but I think we will keep the first Settlers together, to form a cluster of cities and try hard to place the FP there. Then again, maybe we will decide to go for it, since the Road south is being made anyway.

quote:

Fine. Is WV233 OK? New Plymouth was banking on the Wheat.

Both sites are good, so WV233 is ok. It just felt like a waste to leave the last land close to the capital empty. We will first settle the Grasslands south of Siege Perilous, since the main resource for us there will be food - and that probably for long.

quote:

We are finishing the Musket upgrade (not counting the Spears in the stack down south), and doing research on Monarchy with a Scientist. If it makes sense, we will try to rush a Courthouse in the planned FP city south (I know it would in C3C, but am not sure about PTW). Since our development was and is focused primarily on Markets, we will need a partner with Libraries, who will do the actual research. We got Gold and we want to spend it well.

Got spare money?

Sent this one to Cort Haus:

quote:

Hello there

We will soon begin putting cities down in the claimed ex-Monkey Grasslands. If you can move Tuskany, that would be very nice (one tile to the north-east, 9 on the NumPad, is the location we have in mind). If that cannot be done, you can leave the city for now, doing whatever it does. The site it blocks is low-priority as long as we lack the FP, so there is no big rush.

Due to the War Happiness from LL we can now actually use the Ivory to move the lux slider down. Our Workers will make a Road south and put a Colony there (a city would be just too useless at the moment).

We have Horsemen on the peninsula west of Whale Song. They have spotted two Monkey Galleys. Another one was seen close to Whale Song.

We also (finally) have a Galley moving south. You will probably see it north of New Plymouth next turn.

Cheers

Question: Tabemono did not answer about the LL Embassy in two turns. Do we show the Embssy pic to CoD now, or do we wait longer?

Got this from Cort Haus just now:

quote:

Hi Modo,

We moved into position outside Whalesong, leaving you the option of two tiles to advance to, and will also keep a space for your workers to funnel through the chokepoint to the south until our workers have finished around there.

Monkey have a galley S of Whale Song, possibly moving east. We have two galleys as blockers / interceptors round there and our second army near Tuskany able to move toward a threat. If monkey pull troops out of WS for a flanking raid it'll make our job easier at WS.

Seeing as Monkey heal between CoD's turn and Pythons, a full CoD assault next turn may not be best. Early on in the war CoD sent a stack of horsemen to weaken a Numid stack, but all Monkey HP were replaced by Python's turn, and some horsemen were lost for nothing. If Python use their cats first, there will be some HP off the Monkey stack for CoD's attack.

The other thing is defensive cats. If CoD attack first next turn, the defensive cats will hit both CoD then Python as the turn ends between us - allowing Monkey to use them twice. If Python assault first, then CoD's main LB attack wouldn't face the cats, and the overall odds of victory would be improved. Against this, Monkey would get another turn of pinging us.

What do you think? I'm not trying to protect CoD's stack particularly (our 200+ units (incl workers) are expensive to maintain), just looking for the best way to defeat Monkey.

Another thought - they'll probably send their fire against the CoD stack, as your Muskets could give you a GA which they might prefer you not to get. We'll see.

Onwards for the Monstrous Regiments!

Regards,

-Cort

And my reply:
quote:

Hello Cort Haus,

We will naturally move to attack Whale Song. I guess there is little point in you attacking on the first turn, except if you can actually kill something right away. If the situation is similar to that battle in the past, you should probably wait for us to damage them. Our Longbows should give Monkey some headaches.

You are probably right that they would not want to give us the GA, meaning you will get most of the poo they throw. We hope to get some weakened Monkey units in the end, so that we can kill them even with Musketeers. I guess we will soon see how that works out...

We have new cities in ex-Monkey territory, one of which will host our FP. Those need to be defended. We have units there, but not as many as we probably should have. (This last sentence courtesy of The Monty Paranoia Party. )

The Road leading down south is shaping up, so bringing back units as reinforcements should be easier now (in case we need them).

The answer is no, but I felt like giving credit to the last attempt. This e-mail came in today (Sorry for the formatting, the message got terribly messed up due to automatic line breaks.):

quote:

Good Day Python,

Thanks for the save.

Monkey is looking forward to the final showdown between us.

Just want to remind you guys, that our offer to help you backstab CoD is still available.

We have no idea what you have available, but.....

CoD attacks us.. our city will hold. You attack the CoD stack. And then invade CoD from the North
We finish of the CoD stack (if it remains), and then send our army North with your stack to attack CoD from the South.

This offer was made during the first turn of the war...is still remains
available to you guys now.

We are a little confused as to how you guys will ever become a dominent power by splitting your empire into two.

Effectively taking the two poorest ends of the continent....we never
understood your reasons for that.

Not for the war...war is part of the game. But to accept a deal to get the worst land & having a split empire.

Anyway ...

After/if our city falls, we have a few options still available to us.

One is to continually harrass both of you, with galleys & warriors etc
(original plan)

The other is to just disband & leave the game (current favourite plan)

However... we owe some workers to Latin Lover for the techs they sold us.

If you will allow us to send our Galleys North to LL, then we will agree not to harrass you guys for at least the official game 20 turns.

Although....If no-one in our teams wants to continue with the game.. we will probably just disband everything anyway.

So... we offer peace immediately after whale song falls, and we be allowed to send galleys to LL

Otherwise... Monkey spends the rest of our game (until we get bored) trying to harass your team as much as possible.

We are not making any offers to CoD though. If we can agree on the peace, then you will have to get them on board about our galleys as well.

Regards

Sounds like the most viable offer at this time. I don't see any reason not to - LL will fall soon enough anyway.

Well, maybe it is. Still has to be discussed with Cod, though. Should I ask them?

Not sure how viable it is without CoD having a chance at peace, though. Maybe I read it wrong, but it seems like they want CoD's cooperation on the galleys in exchange for peace with us, and have no intention of making peace with our allies.

Well, they want something like a truce after Whale Song is down. This is more of a concern for CoD than for us, really. We will be done with Monkey once the continent is clear, I presume.

Okay, the continent is officially Monkey-free.

From Cort Haus:

quote:

Hi Modo,

Excuse the brevity (it's late) but here's the battle report. I'll write more later on :

* Whale Song Destroyed!

23 kills - 7NM, 14 Archers, 2 Warriors
Lost 2 horses, 1 warrior + 2 retreats.

Monkey Navy

Monkey ships at Whale Song 477:
SS Preying Mantis, SS Osprey, SS Scorpion, SS Gator

Monkey ships at Whale Song 4:
another SS Scorpion

at Screecher Monkey 3 :
SS Hawk, SS Mosquito, SS Cotton Mouth

It looks like maybe 20 units escaped, and they have a strong fleet so I rushed 5 galleys in our west to add to the four in theatre (if they survive). The 2nd CoD army should be able to respond to any landings Monkey tries in your new terrain, and we still have ~ 10 fresh LB that could move north this turn. I accidently moved 1 LB the wrong way - never mind.
