quote: Cort Haus,
Excellent news, thank you. We will have 10 archers of our own at Siege Perilous ready to upgrade, and several others en route, as you are no doubt aware.
As far as Monkey Island goes, if we reduce them to it, we'll have accomplished the bulk of our initial objective. I'm taking it as a good sign for their own opinion of the war that they would fortify it thus.
It's entirely up to you what to do with the horses, of course, but I'm not keen on the holding power of horses alone against NM's, and would think they'd be more useful bolstering the main stack, with the protection of spears and longbows.
Cake for us, Death for Monkey.
Cheers,

Octavian X,
We should have sent Feudalism last turn, as it's a prerequisite for Invention, which we'll now have to send you next turn. So, Silks and Feudalism were sent accepted on this turn.
We upgraded 11 archers to longbows, five of whom will slip in behind your current train of forces on the war road, and the other six are in Silkfest . We are building our own Great South Road from BadCrumble to Cheeky Monkey then continuing south to Siege Perilous.
For a decent SoD we're thinking of 20 Longbows, 10 Spears and 10 cats. We have most of the spears but gave all our cats to Python at the start of the war. We also have 16 horses in the south though, including five now hunting barbs (and maybe NM's) in the ice south of Monkey. Add them to the stack, wheel it into Monkey like a giant wooden rabbit, then er ...
It would take a while longer to get that together, though the near-completion of our Forbidden Palace will help.
What are your thoughts on the Second Wave?

Thanks, then for the silks/feudalism/invention. While I'm thinking about it, do we owe you guys for feudalism?
As for our second wave, we do have numerous archers and some survivor swords in Siege Perilous (I forget the precise number). We're probably lacking in spears, but have around ten catapults at the ready. We also keep a giant wooden bagder at the ready...
The second wave should be someplace unexpected. I'm betting they expect an attack at Orangutan. And, looking at a map, I'm thinking any attempt to 'divide and conquer' might fail anyway, considering the close proximity of Monkey cities and the roads between them.
Considering the longbow's strength, our best bet may be a feint against the Monkey mercs. Let them spot a small, but still threatening, longbow force to draw out the mercenaries, and pick off those that take the bait. Then again, we lose the bait. Ah, I'm always worthless with military strategies.
It might just work out if we split all the troops in half. The first half attacks Orangutan. Wait some turns after Monkey's troop in the area are definetly depleted, and begin a second attack (with the full strength of the first) on Gorilla.
I'm open to any of your ideas, as they're probably better than mine.

OK, I've made a production and transport plan which I've posted in full on the CoD forum. While that is being digested and considered, here is the conclusion:
CoD can deliver the following to the Northern Front in 12 turns (our T137)
9 Spears, 1 Sword, 10 Cats, 15 Longbows, 11 Horsemen, 1 Settler, plus Workers if needed, while maintaining 5 Horsemen and 1 Spear to force a Monkey rear-guard in the Deep Icy South.
The units will travel south via our own Great South Road, currently being rapidly carved by workers in amazing make-up through hill, mountain and jungle from Badcrumble to Seige Perilous. This will avoid traffic delays on the Pythonian War Road.
Tabemono should be starting Gunpowder this turn, either joint-funded by CoD and Python, or with CoD researching the top branch - we're waiting to hear from them what they think. They should have GP before 12 turns (8-9 if full whack, I reckon) so we could upgrade Spears to Muskets, cash and Saltpeter permitting before the assault.
Arrian reckons a direct, joint Python/CoD 2 SoD march into Monkeyland might be the way to go. I was wondering about a possible flanking approach between Gorilla and Macaque to force the defence of 2 cities, but it would take longer to get into position. Is Dave around? ISTR this war was his idea, he must be interested in its progress
Our FP is coming in two turns, and as you've seen, jungle clearing proceeds apace in the Corinth / Plymouth area. Quite apart from the lush, productive grassland, it is symbolic of our struggle against the Monkeys!

Let's see...
I estimate that we will have around 25 upgraded longbows, six spearmen, and around four settlers come T137. We will also have six survivor swords and three horses in Siege Perilous. FYI, last turn we were still considered average to Monkey military strength.
Considering that our forces are made up of the longbows, Gunpowder may be a prerequisite to attack. Taking twelve turns to work on it, troop movement timing considered, is a good idea as well, to save money for spear upgrade costs. Plus, what would we be without our Musketeers?
I'll ask around for Dave and Sir Ralph to look at potential battle plans.
And, best of luck with your jungle clearing. If you want, we could sell/send/loan you guys some of our spare cross-dressing lumberjacks to speed the job along.

Octavian X,
We've started researching Monothesim at a six turn pace at a beaker cost of ~630, intending on this being split between CoD, Python and Tabemono. We have three libraries so ought to be using them for a while before saving for the hoped-for muskets upgrade. We haven't heard yet from Tabemono on the ETA and price of GP from them - do you have any news on that one?
The CoD Longbows on your war-road were the last of our units to be going south on that route, so it'll be clear from now on. Our road is coming down south from Badcrumble and will run parallel to yours on the approach to Siege Perilous.
Monkey have Engineering - didn't notice when, but hopefully we can get going before they have too many of their own Longbows.

Octavian X,
I had missed an email from Kloreep of Tabemono, and only just found it. From 3rd July, they'd started GP at 18 turns pace - not at a defecit yet, I think they were waiting for us to suggest a funding level.
Had I seen this we probably wouldn't have started Monotheism and might be now sending them gold to enable max pace research on GP.
So either we break off Monotheism research for now, or, if Python can send Tabemono enough gold to allow max research, that can include your cash contribution for Monotheism to Tabemono instead of us, and we'll supply Monotheism to them as part payment for GP, with a cash balancer afterwards depending on the research cost of GP.
Therfore,
if GP costs 1300 beakers to research, that's 433 each. Mono will cost 630 beakers to research, or 210 each.
Therfore,
CoD pay 433g to Tabemono for GP,
Tabemono pay 210g to CoD for Mono,
net = CoD pay 223g to Tabemono.
Python pay 433g to Tabemono for GP and 210g to CoD
The amount the Python would owe CoD is close to what CoD would owe Tabemono, so if Python were able to pay their third of GP and their third of Mono (433 + 210 = 643) to Tabemono, then CoD pay the balance of 23g to Tabemono, and all 3 teams get both techs, and quickly. It all depends on whether Python can spare what's needed to cover Tabemono's deficit - until CoD complete research on Monotheism, when cash could again be available. CoD estimated they could get GP in 12 turns at max (90%) research, and at that time Tabemono estimated a higher research capability, so a similar or better time-frame would be likely at max power.
I've posted this idea in our own forum and have sent it to Tabemono via Kloreep too, and we'll see what everybody says.

Looking at the state of our finances, it will be rather difficult for Monty Python to fund much research, as a good deal of our treasury has been sunk into funding longbow upgrades. Right now, we have 218g and are making 42gpt. If I remember correctly, we have about 13 more archers en-route to Siege Perilous, all of whom need to be upgraded. That amounts to 520g, meaning that, with our current reseaves, we'll be sinking our entire earnings into upgrades. Understand, that if we allow our current treasury to be redirected for payment toward research, we'll have to hold off our wave of the Second Attack.
If it matters, our lone scientist will complete his research of monotheism in 19 turns. Monotheism isn'ta high priority for us, though we'd like to start a Spanish Inquisition soon.
All of the above taken to consideration, whichever plan works best for CoD should be fine.

Hi Octavian X,
According to the original estimates, Tabemono should discover GP in about 2 turns. I've written to them asking for confirmation of this. We've been funding them 65gpt for researching this. I reckon your Monotheism should arrive in about 14 turns, is that right? Do you have a deal worked out with Tabemono for that and GP?
If you have spare workers, perhaps they could head for possible SP sites on hills or mountains in readiness.
Regards,
Cort
| Cort Haus,
Your estimates are correct: 13 turns until monotheism as of now.
I'm afraid, though, that we've not talked with Tabemono about monotheism and gp. I'll send a message to them as well inquiring about pricing and such. Thanks for the reminder, though.
One more thing - we've finished upgrading our force of archers into longbowmen. We're waiting mostly to see if we have any saltpeter available to upgrade some spears to musketeers. It won't be something to hold up the war over, given that we really can't afford more upgrades anyway with as large a military as we're handling. Python is ready, nonetheless, and better sooner than later, I think, given that now our military is rated stronger than that of the Monkeys.

Kloreep,
I've been reminded that you Tabemono should be completing it's research on gunpowder soon (two turns, iirc). Of course, considering that whole little conflict with the Monkeys ( ), we Pythonians would like to get a piece of the action.
Our lone scientist has been laboring on the study of monotheism for many turns. We'll complete that technology in 13 turns at our current pace of non-funded research, though it could be done in four if we had more gold.
We than propose a deal. Monotheism for Gunpowder, with extra gold from us to make up the difference of 12 tech points.
Talk amongst yourselves, and get to us soon, as we'll need word of your thoughts on this trade in order to prepare for our next attack.
Thanks,

Friend Pythonese,
We will be receiving the knowledge of Gunpowder 3 turns from now, in the year 150 AD. I am afraid we had a previously arranged deal for Monotheism with a certain sunshine-based culture, and I offer our humble apologies, but I'm sure we can work out an agreement with your fine people. Perhaps we can meet in chat to discuss it?

Rats.
If you don't want our brand of monotheism, we could offer you a lovely recipe for Pythonian spam. This recipe would come with a deal that we agree needs to be hammered out between our two nations, in a deal that would likely include our gold.
Though, at this point, if we're going to be paying a large amount of money, we'll want to hold off any purchase to first ensure that we actually have access to saltpeter.
And, I agree that a good way to work through this is a chat - when is someone from Tabemono available? I'm usually around during the evenings (U.S. time).

We will have Gunpowder in two turns. Our Spearmen are in Silkfest praying for Saltpeter, and the rest of the stack is being assembled as you have seen - we should have ~20LB and 20cats at the front in 6-7 turns. I hope that's not too late for you guys.
We withdrew our stack to Siege Perilous 1 away from the new Monkey city. They're obviously going for more upkeep.
If we do have SP in our territory it might need hooking up. You indicated before that you weren't planning on Musket upgrades, but do you have a deal with Tabemono for Gunpowder. If not, and you have SP but we don't, then we'd need to get you Gunpowder before you could trade us the SP. We might have to speak to Tabemono about that. Most of our workers are hacking the jungle, so we'll be near the mountains & hills there, but if SP appeared in the hills near Izzardia, might you have a couple of spare super-Pythonian workers nearby to help reach it?

We have about 20 spears, 30 longbows, and 17 cats either in or on their way to Siege Perilous. We can wait longer, though we're ready when you are. A delay only means a larger army on our side of things.
We need to talk to Tabejin again about Gunpowder. We did contact them early, but discussion died off. I plan to PM them again soon. A lot of it, though, is contingent on whether or not there's actually enough saltpeter to go around - if it's in CoD's territory, and there's none for us at home, we'll wait gunpowder out a bit longer for a chance at a lower price.
If you guys do have gunpowder, though, we can help some with the roading effort - There's a large stack of workers near our border, and two headed north from Siege Perilous, just in case.
And, as to the city-that-won't-be, thanks for the heads up.

Stange things, actually. Gunpowder was sent to us, accepted, by Tabemono. I talked to Kloreep about it, and he was under the impression there was a joint purchase going on here. I'm about to send him a PM about a price for the tech. Your thoughts?
Anyway, about saltpeter: I uprooted a ton of workers who were mining around some other places of the homeland. They're on there way to Gorge of Eternal Peril, and should have a road there in 4-5 turns.
We're ready for stage two of the attack whenever you guys are.

Cort,
My apoligies for the mix-up. I've got those extra workers on the side of our current road to 'widen the lane,' so to speak, to ease movement.
However you wish to move your troops is up to you guys. By all means, feel free to use our section of the road to speed up the process - a stack of muskets will be a bit more important than a few straggling longbows and spears.
We are basically ready to attack whenever you are, though I'd like to wait until we can upgrade at least one spear in Siege Perilous to start our GA on the first wave. We also should discuss our strategy of attack. I'm thinking it might be best to split our stacks into two groups each - one group from each nation goes in on the coasts of Monkeyland, and and other two halves go down the middle, all simultaneously threatening all Monkey border cities on the first wave - four cities, iirc. Thoughts?
~Octavian X
quote:
Hello Octavian X,
Our units were blocked this turn at Siege-Perilous-9. No matter, but I made up a little picture to remind ourselves of the roads south for each team.
We can upgrade five, hopefully six, Muskets next turn in Silkfest and start moving the following turn. They could save a turn by using the Python road and enable the combined attack to start sooner. It's up to you - if you wanted to get started sooner and don't mind some of your reinforcements being delayed a turn, then you could leave a space for the Muskets.

So, for now, we're still very interested in selling Invention. So, what do you have to offer? We've got feudalism, and will have monotheism in seven turns, so we're not that interested in purchasing that. Remember too that we have military upgrades to pay for.

Up till now its build & send, build & send, and wouldn't want to give anything away publicly (to Monkey). The jungle clearing is going down very well though, and we can certainly taunt the tree-hugging apes with that, though
Arrian sent you a PM saying we're ready to Rock and Roll on our next turn. We have 23 Longbows 22 Catapults, 15 Horsemen, 8 Muskets and a Heavily-made-up-Swordsman. As two stacks would spread the defenders thin and Monkey have a zillion cats, CoD would have to be use one stack probably.

Well, Monkey have partly taken Trip's advice, and partly followed their own pattern of elastic defence.

I'm awaiting comments in our forum, but it looks like CoD go to Orang7 while Python go to Mandrill6, Monkey will be expecting this, but at least we've split them. We would be split too though, which they might favour as they could attack one stack without getting hit by the counter from the other stack.
The trouble with the above is that the big Monkey stack could slip behind us if it is now in Orang and we would have to chase it North. Perhaps Orang8 would be better. Any thoughts from Python?
We won't hurry over our move. Monkey spent nearlky a week on theirs.
