How about Marco Polo, or did I miss someone grab that already?
For your future city explosion, useful Wonders would be:
- Michelangelos (&JSB, but could probably wait)
- Magellans
- Leonardos, to keep those NONEs up to date
- HooverDam, if you are twiddling your thumbs...
Losing Copernicus is serious if you have only one city till 1750, but you can focus research toward Fundy and MobWar more easily that spaceship anyway. It'd be worth it to get Commy and Espionage on the way, as Spies can be used before 1750 in city destruction.
If you can keep the neighbors cities small, but not wipe them out, it will be much faster "growing the empire" after 1750 than having to found a pile of new cities.

Marco Polo - I considered going for this one, but what's the point? We know the other guys are out there, we don't have to worry about them building a spaceship, and we know we have to kill them. It would be nice to know exactly where they are, but we should find out if we go after huts aggressively.
Mike's - why? We should have access to fundy/commie by 1750. Three gold/city under fundy would be nice, but not worth losing eight(!) caravans.
Magellans - definitely agree. Phase 1 - send out mass explorers & diplos to map & tip huts. Phase 2 - send out caravans while we wait for 1750. Phase 3 - hammer time. Gigamap + faster naval movement = good!
Leo - the more huts we can tip, the better this one looks. Number one on my list.
All other wonders - I say deliver the caravans, instead of turning them into marginally useful wonders.
This is not a tech race game, so I'm not crying over the loss of Cope's or Isaac's. We don't need howies and nukes to sweep the map, just a stack of units comparable in power to what the AIs are fielding. My greater concern is keeping the AIs in the stone age so we can assimilate them quickly and painlessly.

Marco Polo is cheap, gives you complete intel for a good while, and allows bypass tech trading as well as map exchange. Maps are VERY useful when you only have a few commodity caravans. If your research is slow you can get techs from one civ and trade to another. Beats depending on huts, which will expire with Invention too.

True. But you might be behind in researching techs (at least at the rate you are going...), so your post-1750 expansion may want to focus on additional techs at first.

With One City you are not going to get many commodity caravans: the commodities are going to get locked into Trade Routes unless you set up early routes with multipliers to lock in early commodities before they change with city growth and additional techs. So aside from Dips you will mostly be building Food Caravans. Might as well put them to use.
One I forgot to mention is Shakespeare's, which would allow OSM to grow larger and home the early ships.

Setting your research slider low will tend to keep the AI researching slowly too, but this strategy depends on having voluminous caravan trade to make up for it.

My two cents: every tech we give away is one the AIs don't have to research. If we give them, say, gunpowder, then they have many cities to build (cheaper) musketeers, while we have one city to build (full-price) musketeers. If we let them build advanced naval units, they have the potential to become a real annoyance with bombardment.
With respect to our immediate neighbors: if we let the Japanese spread unchecked, they are likely to build a city adjacent to ours and steal some of our city squares. And there's always the AI's favorite trick of pillaging...
I'm not much of an OCC player, so I'm not familiar with the advanced techniques regarding alliance and begging for gifts. It seems to me that MPE will be completely wasted without wholesale gifting to make the AIs friendly enough to trade maps.
Again, who cares if we only have steam power and gunpowder in 1750, as long as the AIs don't have battleships and tanks (or, worst case, nukes!).

Twice pi. Pi is the perimeter of a circle whose diameter is one...
My best guess at the original French aphorisms:

Revenge is a dish best eaten cold.

Veering back on topic: in the latter case, some of those things might be very bad...
Edit: one minute faster than Stu in mounting the podium of pedantry!
