The year is 1810, and the ppl elect a Rabbit as President. The new leader looks about and tries to devise a plan of action. He is shocked to note that there is now more than one city in the empire!
Situation: We are a Democracy of 6 cities, total population 3.84 MM. Our power is Weak and our reputation Questionable. Current tax program is 50-50-0, which nets 107 GP/turn and 11 turns/tech. There is 701 GP in the treasury.
We have only one embassy (the nearby Japs), as Marco Polo has expired. We are allied with the Russians and English, at war with the Mongols. Currently building a dip, a rifle, and 4 camels. In addition, we have 13 vans on the hoof, and a couple transports vaguely aimed toward Russian lands.
We have Mike's, Shake's, and SOL.
We also have a gathering strike force near Nara (10). This includes 2 engineers, 4 dragoons, and some rifles.
PrezBun decides on a program of happiness and growth, and declares his intention to establish a clearinghouse for diplomatic information, tentative dubbed "Rabbit's International Unity Club." He also sponsors intensive national engineer training program, promises "useful and dignified work" to all who pass.
1810 (conclusion)
--Mave sliders to 10-20-70 (19 turns, +2 GP/turn).

--Rushed temples are completed in Funifuni, Gondo, and Ormuz. All start on Engineers.
--Despite several Russian and Viking ships in the area, we load 5 camels onto a transport toward Russ lands.
--Diplomat reports Nara can be bought for "only" 3,780 GP. It is defended by 3 muskets and a frigate, with no barracks or walls.
--Troops are sent on "maneuvers" in fortressed sqare adjacent to Nara (10). Japanese are reassured that all is well and they should sleep soundly knowing their neighbors are "protecting" them...
1816

--Japanese warn that we are in violation of terms of our peace treat with them.
--Ormuz celebrates.

--Our New Gov't = Democracy.
--We attack and capture Nara (now size 3), gaining 134 GP and learning Atomic Theory.
--Two shipments of Salt delivered to Smolensk (92 + 99 GP).
1820
--Japanese learn Explosives, reitierate their feeling that, for some reason, we remain at WAR!! Several green meanies commit hari-kiri against our fortified defenders in and around Nara.
--W TPD celebrations return in F-F, Gondoliere, Ormuz, Aleppo. O Sole Mio and Nara join the party.
--We use an eng to found the city of Valencia and allow Ace to be productive.
--Freight to Russians: Wool (d) to Smolensk 187; Gold (d) to Smolensk 324; Wool to Sverdlovsk 123.
--Time to check in with our friends the English. We reluctantly give them Conscriptioh, they gleefully gift us another 200 GP.
1822
--English learn Democracy, trade conscription to Russians for Atomic theory.
--O Sole Mio now size 27 (max, until we irrigate the remaining tiles).
--Japanese continue their attacks. We do lose a unit. Japanese activity spotted near northern cities.
--WLT in Ormuz.

-----------------------------
Diplomatic Field Report
-----------------------------
Russians -- Democracy, 2744 GP, 17 cities, no white techs, studying Tactics
Vikings -- Democracy, 2000 GP, 13 cities, have The Corp, studying Tactics
Chinese -- Republic, 508 GP, 9 cities, studying Conscription
English -- Republic, 2032 GP, 15 cities, studying Communism
Mongols -- Republic, 1505 GP, 9 cities, studying Feudalism
1830
--Russians now Democracy, trade Chemistry to English for Monotheism
--Japanese learn Economics.
--Spy reports Edo defended by 4 muskets and city walls (no barracks)
--Deliveries to Novgorod -- silk (d) 100 GP, salt 71, spice 64.
--All WLT cities now size 8. Sliders moved to 40-40-20, which would net 140 GP/turn and techs every 13 turns.
------------------
PrezBun reaches his term limit. His spin doctors issue a Presidential Press Release noting that our civ now has a total of 8 cities (press release says "33% more!"), a treasure of 416 GP ("rich as Croesus" sez the PR), and that our population is now 5.36 MM (PR says "a 40% increase!!"). we also built the United Nations (PR: "WoW!!!!!)
Our Power is now Inadequate (PR says -- "better than ever!!!").
Our Reputation is now Dishonorable (PR notes that "'Honor' is a big part of our reputation!!!!")
-------------------
Our next ruler should strongly consider a move to a cash economy -- perhaps some Fundy turns to to build and use an army vs. the evil Japanese. Growth is not practical until we can afford aqueducts.
Speaking of the Japanese, it's interesting to note that Kyoto (translation = "nice target") contains both the science wonders.
Also, please note that the Russians have established a city on the SE portion of our continent. I've sent out a spy to find it...
We have several engineers running around, creating infrastructure and intended to ultimately found cities (all except the NONE eng, who we hope will be with us for centuries...)
Not sure, but I think Julius Brenzaida is next...

Monk,
may be 2 or 3 more Cannons (or Cavallery) but more troops would probably not speed up the war against the Japanese. But an interesting strategy would be to pepare a conquest of the Russian Continent as soon as the 3 remaining Japanese cities in the South have fallen. With only one frontier to the East we could do this (under Fundamentalism and with more troops).
The Iron Clad would probably kill itself against Edo. No, I wanted to send it to the ship line. The ship line is unprotected and Russian Frigates and a Viking Iron Clad were showing up. Sooner or later we will have to build some of them. The only problem: only three of our cities have access to the ocean.

Here is the log.
1850ad. I think we shall remain in fundy. With money, we can get everything. I trade for tactics with the Russians, thanks Bloody Monk. Catherine then cancels our alliance ! Kyoto production changed to spy. Library is maybe not a bad idea in this potential, but it can wait for when and if we grow. An all-out war with spies and cavalry looks like a good option to me. We rushbuild many cavalries.
1851ad City walls of Osaka, Japanese capital, falls thanks to sabotage. After heavy fighting the city falls and we now own Sun Tzu. Railroads build to link to the last Japanese cities. More rushbuilding at the end of the turn.
1852ad. Many sabotage acts, not very successful. I rushbuild many more spies.
1853ad. Edo walls fall, city quickly captured. Same story for Satsuma. We’re losing some spies (sorry LaFayette) but nothing else. I start building a navy (some Ironclads, it would have pleased SG[2]), as we shall soon visit other continents.
1854ad. We are now 7 millions. Satsuma rased by Japanese counter-attack. Nagoya wall falls and … it is captured. We now own Eiffel Tower. Yokohama discovered. We start building more engineers too.
1855ad. Matsumaya discovered. Yokohama captured.
1856ad. More rushbuilding.
1857ad. Matsumaya destroyed. Eastern Star founded.
1858ad. Persepolis captured. As Mongols were cutting some road connection, we declare war on them and kill one of their units. A fitting way to end my turns.
We have now 17 cities and some might be build in the next turns, engineers are reaching good spots.
I haven’t made my usual rushbuild on the last turn, leaving it to my successor. We now have 2993 gold.
Our forces : 19 engineers, 21 riflemen, 15 cavalry, 3 cannons, 8 ironclads, 5 transports and 7 spies.
There is one Japansee city yet to be discovered and one Russian city in the far west of our continent.

I think I could have been more efficient with the fighting and stand ready for Robust Criticism. My ironclad fleet is ready to bring me back to the institute. Our main problem, I think, is that the sea is unusually crowded. I would attack the Russians or Viking next, but maybe someone will have a better idea. I’ve pushed our civilization in the direction of “all for war” but switching is still possible.
Here is the save. |
War IS fun, Julius, isn't it?!? Nice turns.
I doubt there is much basis for Robust Criticism since the result was successful. My criticisms are minor. The vast military/transport force is unbalanced as to home city distribution. If a change in gov't is contemplated, this must first be addressed.
This next is more a call to action. There is now a fleet ( 8+2) of Clads which are in a state of "use em before you lose em"; to wit, Electricity has been discovered already. And since both the Russians and the Vikings know Electricity, I would target someone else first. I say go after the Mongols, particularly Karakorum where Magellan's calls out to be liberated.
Finally, and also minor, why not build the remaining Clads in the northern ports to fascilitate exploration of all that black space??

Congratulations, Julius! The Japanese war has ended in just 10 turns. A successful campaign!
Monk, yes, of cause, these nice little ladies are always needed. Why the Russians? Well, the alliance was nice during the OCC time but of little value at this stage (easy to say now, it´s allready cancelled ). When I traded maps after building MPE I thought this would be the natural path of conquest once the home continent is secured: Russians, Vikings, English, Chinese. For the pathetic Mongols we could send an expedition force from the home continent in the late game. If we go for the Mongols first our campaign to the West would be delayed. I am probably influenced to much by playing ELGs: always trying to save a few turns. Certainly other approaches are possible, too.

Oh boy, we captured Tower... that should help our rep...
The Russians sounded kind of desperate during Zenon's rounds...
And where did Persepolis come from?
