Dear Ambassador,
We have made contact with your Warrior Arnold.
Our Nation is aware that yours started with knowledge of Masonry and Bronze Working. I'm sure you know that we started with Masonry and Alphabet.
We would like to set up a mutually beneficial Trade arrangement with one of our neighbors. I would like to respectfully request that you let us know what you are currently researching. We are researching BW. We are very close at this point.
We are not really interested so much in trading for BW as we might be with what you are currently researching. We should share information as to what our future plans are for Tech research so that we don't duplicate research. I'm sure the other teams are thinking of this as well as no one wants to fall behind anyone else in the market of Technology.
I've told you that we are researching BW, had we known you were one of our neighbor's we wouldn't have chose that goal, rather we would have counted on building a strong trading relationship with your team instead. We view the development of a mutually beneficial relationship with you as being desirable.
Please let us know what you are researching and we can start to negotiate for Technologies that we have now for ones that you will have in the future. I will then also share what our plans for the next Tech we will be researching after BW is.
BTW, we researched Pottery first and went for BW immediately afterwards. We are now just few turns from discovering it - as we were lucky with a hut and got 25 gold, we'd consider speeding our research a little bit, buying the "rest" of BW from you, if the price is right. Care to come with a figure?
Has your team had any luck with the Goody Huts? Ours has been a mixed bag. I'll show you ours if you show us yours?
Respectfully bigfree1

Greetings from CDG,
As mentioned our appointed ambassador to your nation, GhengisFarb, is currently away for a few days. On his return he will doubtless be in contact to start helping to build a hopefully strong relationship with your nation.
As President of Elucidia, I take great pleasure in the news that you are our neighbours, and I look forward to developing strong trade ties with Apolyton. Unfortunately our current trade options are severely limited as it seems both our nations followed pretty much the same research paths. We of course started with Masonry and Bronze Working and firstly developed Pottery before moving on to our current project, Alphabet.
It seems the only difference between us right now is we have BW and you have Alphabet, its a pity we didnt meet earlier so we could have arranged to deviate from our tech paths. We would be extremely interested in following such a course of action from this point on as you suggested. Our next tech project will be Iron Working which we should be starting shortly. We would be pleased if you would reciprocate by informing us of your next project so we can plan a tech path for the longer term that does not collide with yours.
Re goodie huts we have had also had a cash one and another one so far. Got a few more to check out though so hopefully we'll get lucky.
Finally, as a sign of goodwill towards yourselves we will be moving back our exploring warrior who is currently just south of your city. We would see it as a much appreciated reciprocation if you would do the same with your warrior.
Hope to speak with your good selves again soon, and heres hoping for a long and rewarding relationship with your great nation.
Yours Sincerely,
Kentonio
President of Elucidia

Report on Chat with CDG of 16 Mar 2003 afternoon est.
The chat took place on CDG's chat room. Unable to log the room. These are my notes.
Present for CDG. Kentonio (president) Elucidias (Chief of Staff) Micaelis_Rex (Minister of War).
Present for Apolyton. Trip, notyoueither, Togas, bigfree1 (in order of appearance).
We tried to arrange a deal where we paid gold for BW. They wanted to trade for Alphabet.
During the course of discussions, they revealed that they are 14 turns to Alphabet. We revealed that we are 8 turns to BW.
They would not get off the point that they wanted Alpha for BW. Would not budge.
We conferred among ourselves and decided that the risks of them bluffing and they are actually on IW is too great to give Alphabet now under any circumstances.
They rejected a proposal where they would start on IW now, and trade that for Alphabet. We tried to explain that if they sold us BW and switched to IW, we would both arrive at MM earlier. They countered that we should abandon BW. I indicated we were very unlikely to do that.
We left them with the knowledge that if they change their minds, we will both have MM sooner. We would research it and they would research other techs.
At this time, there is a lack of trust on both sides. Too much distrust to be able to engage in any such trades as of now. However, they expressed eagerness to pursue different tech paths after our current projects.
---
They inform us that all they have found is jungle and desert. They feel we are on an island, although they have not exhausted the possibilities.
---
They wanted to have us move back to the north. We declined.
We agreed that our units would respect each other's city borders, and that we would not harass each other's units.
---
GhengisFarb is CDG's ambassador to us.
---
During the course of the chat, CivGeneral popped in. He is a player for CFC. He may or may not have noticed a line by Kentonio during negotiations. CivGeneral expressed that he wanted to switch from CFC to CDG.

Report on my chat this morning with Ghengis Farb of CDG:
On their boards, he discovered that they have a "tech research plan to be ratified between the two sides." He stated that, "The plan on our site shows us researching BW, IW, Wheel, Warror Code, Ceremonial and Myst for your Alph, Writing, Mapmaking"
I explained to him that Trip was acting in a totally unofficial mannor, that he posted the deal to us and verified that it was the same deal. I explained to him that it was being heavily debated and would likely be rejected, and that we were working on something different that would be sent to them by BigFree1 later today or tomorrow.
Ghengis Farb is fine with us sending him proposals via email or PMs. His email addy is: ghenghisfarb@yahoo.com
(note: He indicated this address was stolen by internet hackers, but sent me the Team Game save file on Sunday from this address).

In the wake of our discovery of the Gamecather Alliance to the south-east of CDG, and our decision to postpone our trade deal with them, we decided that some sort of response to their blatant deception was required. Instead of an angry PM, BigFree1 and myself spoke with Kentonio and Elucidus in chat.
Their chatroom has a lousey scroll buffer and the java is not "cut & paste"able. We were unable to log the conversation. This is my recollection of the discussion. I invite BigFree1 to post anything I miss.
At the start, they asked to speak to Trip. I doubt they were pleased to see myself and BigFree1. They'll be less thrilled after today...
In the begining, they indicated that they thought we had a deal (thanks to Trip), and I explained that Trip was acting wholely unofficially, which they then stated that they knew.
They indicated there was "debate" about our warrior's movement. We acted confused. Promised them we would not go near their borders and that we were moving away from their city. I explained that we wanted to explore the continent, they indicated that they were not "the AI" and felt we were invading their territory. We told them not to worry, we were moving away from it...
They suggested we move away to the north. So I asked them if they've explored the south yet.
They say, "not yet." BigFree points out we're more south than them, we could explore it and they explore west, we trade knowledge.
They go on about goodie huts that they claim. BigFree points out goodie huts are "first come, first serve"
They say we should explore north, they claim the south. Bigfree asks them about their border claim while I take another route...
I tell them they're acting strange about this. "Is there something in the south you don't want us to know about?"
They ask if we're going to move north or not
I ask them to answer my question.
They ask if we're saying we're not going to move north with our warrior.
I ask them, again, to please answer my question.
Kentonio says that he's not one of my deputies and he doesn't have to do what I tell him to do (rant rant rant)
I say it's a simple question and I'd just like them to answer it.
They threaten us, saying in red colored letters that if we move any further south, they will take it as an act of agression against CDG
I say that I'm sorry that they feel they have to threaten us. We're not threatening them. I'd like him to answer my question.
(note, the evasiveness goes on and on for a while until...)
Kentonio says, "no we haven't met anyone or anything, OK?"
They ask about us moving our warrior again, BigFree asks about their claimed border, I say that it's unnecessary, we don't need to discuss it now.
I tell them we were hoping they'd be honest with us.
They freak out. Get angry that we're calling them liars and ask how they've lied.
I point out that we can see the border of GCA from where our warrior stands, and we know they can see it too.
Kentonio replies, "of course we can [see them] that doesn't alter the fact that we haven't met them yet"
I politely say that we're sorry, we were hoping that we could trust you guys, they protest, I say that I need to go and get some work done.
They ask if we're going to move our warrior north. I tell them I will report back to Apolyton and the decision will be made. They repeat their threat that they will consider it an agressive act against CDG if we move south.
I tell them I will convey that threat to Apolyton.
End of discussion.

Greetings from Apolyton
I, the Ambassador of Apolytonia, hereby offer the following proposal to the Nation of Elucidia. If you agree to this propsal as outlined, mark "AGREED" on the bottom of the document and foward it to bigfree1. It shall then be considered a binding agreement once I've recieved it.
APOLYTONIA AND ELUCIDIA HEREBY AGREE:
That we are brothers, separated by only a jungle, and bound together in our common desire to survive and prosper. We wish for there to be peace between us, and in order to ensure that peace we hereby agree to the following:
1) There shall be no war or conflict between us. Our units shall not attack each other, nor shall they enter the cultural borders of the other party without permission. This shall be considered a Non-Aggression Pact.
2) Our settlers shall not settle within the cultural borders of the other nation, nor shall they settle in any place that is 5 tiles or less from the capital of the other party.
3) The warrior BigFree shall remain in place until turn 23, and at that time he may move south to make contact with the Gamecatcher Alliance. Once this contact is made, he shall not retrace his steps, he may only explore south of the GCA nation. Any attempt by CDG to block the warrior BigFree’s movement will be seen as a hostile act and a violation of the Non-Aggression Pact.
4) Should the warrior BigFree make contact with any other nations, Apolyton shall immediately inform CDG of this fact.
5) This agreement shall last 30 turns after it is ratified by both parties. This agreement shall be open for renegotiation after 25 turns have passed.

Well, here is a very quick reply from kentonio:
---------------------------------------------------------------
RE: NAP Propsal to CDG
We are very happy with the proposal in all aspects but the question of the 5 tile radius. I am under extreme pressure from my cabinet and people for this to be a line between us as discussed yesterday. If your people can bend on this one matter we can assure you we would not consider it a permanent border and we will immediately ratify the proposal. Please work with me on this one, I have no more room to move on this issue. Incidentally Elucidian elections are currently starting, if I am replaced as President in the next few days I will give you immediate notice of this.
Yours Sincerely,
Kentonio

Hi kentonio
We are very pleased that you want to work with us. There was a lot of discussion about whether or not your team saw the value of cooperation; it is clear that you do now, we couldn’t be more pleased.
It was, however, very difficult to get the team to agree to a ‘line’ instead of a ‘radius’; you must understand that it took a lot of wrangling on my and a few other’s that shared my view to get the team to consider this. In the end I’m glad that a peaceful solution looks to be on the verge of happening. But, we need some clarification on the definition of the ‘line’ before we can go further. We have one question that if you can simply answer with a number, it would help us tremendously. Here’s the question:
If you put a settler into your capital, how many tiles in the NE direction you want to be allowed to move it before founding a city?

RE: RE: RE: NAP Propsal to CDG
I have double checked the map and there are 12 tiles ne/sw between our capitals. We would suggest city placement no further ne/sw than 5 squares from the capitals. I cannot stress enough though that we are completely open to discussion on this, 5 just seems to be a reasonable number considering both our placements. We look forward to cooperating as fully as possible in finding a solution that suits us both.

While I was waking up, Trip went to track him down and logged onto their own IRC server, where we had an inpromptu chat. Nothing really to report there except some small talk, but we found out who their ambassador to our nation is. They don't really want to talk until he is available. So we sent off the email to their ambassador, History Buff:
quote:
History Buff,
Greetings from Apolyton! Apparently, you have just discovered our civilization. We are holding a quick chat on the #gamecatcher channel in your IRC server with Lucky and he informed me that you are the ambassador to our nation, so I thought that I would send this off as a quick email.
Our people believe that it would be in both of our civilization's best interests to be at peace and share technology. We are willing to make an effort towards this. Would you be willing to sign a non-aggression pact with us for the duration of 30 turns? We could renew it after 25 turns or throw it out with no consequences.
We know that your civilization started with the knowledge of alphabet and ceremonial burial. Our own civilization started with alphabet and masonry. We are currently working towards bronze working and will be done shortly. I hope that we can come to an agreement on tech trading! We would like to discuss a tentative proposal, as we have pottery, masonry and soon will have bronze working to offer. Is there anything you would like to offer in exchange for this knowledge? Also, would it be possible to find out what your current research status is and what you may be researching in the future? We would like to research something different from you so that we can trade to each other, speeding up both our collective research! Let me know how you feel about this.
Speaking of alphabet, I am quite glad to learn that you guys have knowledge of the alphabet (and possibly gals? We here at Apolyton are apparently only of a homogenous gender at the moment, which makes procreation rather difficult... and boring). It makes communicating much easier. Have you had contact with the Elucidians, who are apparently just north of one of your cities? They have no knowledge of alphabet, which made it especially hard to communicate with them. Our ambassador to them sent them a friendly letter urging peace between our civilizations. Their reply was a drawing of a stick figure with what appeared to be a spear sticking out of its head! We're not sure what this means though and at the moment, we believe we are on good terms with them; however there seems to be a slight distrust as they feel they are squeezed between you and us. We should work out a plan so that we may educate these primitive people at once, that way we can properly communicate with them!
We look forward to future communication between our two peoples. I think I speak for all of Apolyton when I say that we only want peace and cooperation.
To facilitate communication between our two nations, we would be willing to have a chat online between our leaders to discuss any pertinent information. Do you have an appropriate place where we could chat and be able to maintain a log of all proceedings that occurred? We would even be able to do this at our own site, as we have an IRC server. If you are interested, please let me know and I will fill you in on the connection details and we could go ahead and schedule a time.
If you need to reach me, you can contact me in a few different ways. You can PM me at either Apolyton or at your own website under the name "WhiteBandit" and my private email is whitebandito@yahoo.com, also ICQ# is 6364668 so you can reach me that way as well!
Until we meet again!

Our reply to kentonio on 26 march
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Greetings from Apolyton
We here at Apolyton are somewhat bemused by the fact that your civilization considers the most recent move of BigFree the Warrior a violation of our NAP, while all we are trying to accomplish is to fully comply with the treaty terms.
The agreement clearly states: “...he shall not re-trace his steps" and "Any attempt by CDG to block the warrior BigFree’s movement will be seen as a hostile act and a violation of the Non-Aggression Pact." You explained that the cultural borders implied by your new city were not to be considered an obstacle to the movement of our warrior and we thus raised no objections regarding its foundation, even though it in fact forced and still forces us to stay inside your cultural borders, while it is our sincere intention to never do so.
As GCA asked us to not approach their cultural borders, we moved BigFree the Warrior in such a way that he will be able to leave your cultural borders this turn in a southwards direction, just as our NAP suggests, while not approaching GCA's border at the same time. We are sincerely just exercising our rights to explore unclaimed land, while keeping to the agreement between our civilizations.
If there is another concern of yours not covered by our treaty, we are ready to listen. However, scouting southwards is our priority and right and we truly hope that your great civilization will understand that.

CDG would like an immediate explanation from Apolyton as to the movements of the warrior you have within our territory. As you know re the NAPP agreement that warrior was not to return through our lands after meeting GC. As GC have refused you passage through their lands I agreed as a gesture of friendship to allow the warrior to return through our territory. The instruction I passed to you through Lucky was to move DIRECTLY north back towards Apolytonia. Having recieved the game save I see your nation has unwisely decided to move further into our lands. Not only does this breach the NAPP agreement but suggests hostile intentions. We ask for an immediate explanation of this action and formally express our displeasure with it.
