I'm not suggesting that you Ben Kenobi your way through the game: just that starting off with a good rep will make things easier for you because prices fall sooner. If Doc wants to run around and do naughty things then it's up to him, but I was issuing n00b tips from one who was new to the game not so very long ago.
Jamski, I've already survived the Nashkel assassination (part 2 ). I told you that I saw the bloke approaching with an axe, and cast silence so that he couldn't start his assassination attempt by checking my ID. Then I stabbed him. Twice. He died. w00t! (what does woot mean btw?)

Doc, I wouldn't worry about PayPal any more if you haven't bought BGI from eBray yet. I had to join PayPal this morning so I could subscribe to this rubbishy Civ site I visited a couple of times (), and I'd imagine that lots of other people have too. Except Jamski!

I know, but I don't think starting with a Lawful Good character is a good idea, personally. BG is a roleplaying game, and if you pick an extreme starting position, like Lawful Good, it limits what you can do durin the game while remaining true to the character. I did it first like that, and hates that I couldn't steal anythign, which made things harder. Having a NG or CG character means you can do more things. Starting with 1 higher rep is a minimal benefit (it's like 100 gold at a temple, IIRC) and as such, isn't worth it, IMHO, since it constrains what you can do, and the quests you can take. You can of course ignore rep, but I think you'd lose much of the game not roleplaying at all. The first go is the best time to RP, since it's all new.

Increase the size of your Attachments

It costs a different amount to buy rep depending on what your current rep is. So it would be easier to get CG or NG and then pay the money right at the start, in Candlekeep, so that you get the benefit of the LG start. You don't start to save money until your rep is very high.

It must be someone who really appreciates the new style of mafia games (not me, being Jampiled as I was ), or who doesn't realise that even if you couldn't subscribe then you'd still waste all your time here anyway.

Be my guest. Tell me what happens at the end of the first game then.
Seriously, you don't think I should read the manual when BG2 arrives until I've finished number one?
That is a serious undertaking. I couldn't even look at the pictures.

w00t! (I still don't know what this means. That's a good thing isn't it? )

Maybe I won't get the poster. I am getting it second-hand remember. As long as the manual doesn't go: "After you [spoiled the whole BG1 story], and escaped the [vital plot section], then you have grown up thanbks to defeating [main, as yet unknown baddie], and can begin to take on the challenges of BGII".

No you get that in the introduction sequence.

Make sure you have the volume up when you insert the first CD to install BG2, and whenever starting the programme after that. It plays a little "fanfare" that really makes me go "Oooh Baldur's Gate"

I've only played with the volume on once, when the good duchess was out. Otherwise it (and Minsc in particular) would annoy the hell out of her.

I heard it yesterday. Unfortunately it's quite loud, and my volume was incredibly high because my gf had been watching some crappy sitcom she downloaded. Hence, I nearly ruptured an eardrum.

I had fun listening to it, but it is better that I actually get to play, rather than have a full aural experience and be turfed out onto the street for my pains. Having said that, I haven't played for a week now, and am unlikely to this evening either. We've got the duchess' parents to play host to on Saturday and Sunday so I'm hardly going to get any BG in at all.

you have to play the game with sound on! It's so dull otherwise. Get a headset if you don't want a noisy room.

I would, but my girlfriend already got there first.
She was just quicker than me when we first moved in. For me it'd be a computer room, but she calls it a study, or an office. I normally set my laptop up on the dining table.

I definitely enjoyed the sound in BG1, but Im OK playing it with sound off, when household circumstances require it. Or playing it with sound low.

If only I could turn sound off for Minsc only

Find the wav files for Minsc and replace them with very short silent wav files with the same names??? Worth a try.

I made sure that I got my den when we moved in here. I got my little room on the 2nd floor, Mrs Jamski has her study on the ground floor, and we can both make as much noise as we like

That is indeed the music I mean. Its about 6-10 seconds long, but it really puts be instantly into my BG2 mood.

If anyone's reading this who has not had the joy of hearing the wonderful music of BG2, I have most of the soundtrack as mp3 files which Interplay untill recently offered as free downloads.

I can try and find a new host for them if anyone is interested, or see if someone else has done so.

The best one (IMHO) is the track that plays during dragon battles which is like Stravinsky on steroids.

Anyone?
