Did I misinterpret something? The CP is headed northwest for fertile land, but is stacked with the scout patrol for protection from random mindworms in fungus.

I think they are talking about it should go NW into that nonfungas square CT. It might be rather unlikely that a random mindworm will appear and attack the CP if it is not in fungus.

[Edit]spelling.

[Edit]Same with the last one regarding whether this is a spam post.

I am just proposing that we exit the fungal wall as quickly as possible. We know that fertile lands are there, but attemptiing to move with CP into fungus first might be a turn lost, and turn advantage is precious.

I was planning to head straight north next turn. We can move the CP first or the scout patrol first. Whichever unit moves second has a higher chance of making it, but if the CP moves second and finds a worm (unlikely as it may be) then the scout patrol will have to defend against that worm.

Yes, you are correct. I even gave the sign. That's why I qualify what I said. However, if you read back, both Obstructor and I were talking about North, as in, straight north. Then Chaos said NWish, which was approved. I kinda thought that meant "Move north, then nw, then north, then nw". But here we are with moves made, and everyone is doing their best. We will do fine, I'm sure. I comment because I don't think that your summary does the misunderstanding justice . In the future I will try to be more clear. But I think some people want to go through that fungus, rather than N->N->NW around it. That's fine. It raises an interesting question about whether to move the scout or CP first. Let's get lucky!

BTW, north to me means that Rocky square in our original position.

And no Chaos, you didn't misinterpret anything I don't think. We all got a bit bungled and compromised. Let's make the best of it.

Yes I know. In the beginning of a demo game it is natural for misunderstanding to happen. (This is another reason against turn chats. Oops wrong forum. ) Given more time it'll be easier for people to know what each other is saying by the way he talks.

I'm not giving any opinions one way or the other. Just making some general observations.

[Edit] Again I think I actually had a point for this post. If it is considered spam by the Gaians I will edit it out.

By which you mean 'Discuss this elsewhere?' Be specific please.

As to our next move:

  1. Attempt to move scout North
  2. If fail, move CP southwest into the greenery
  3. If succed with Spatrol, move CP north as well

Not sure this question is for me. But in case it is. Drogue ruled that CMNs cannot give game related advices to teams (unless it's general discussion that you can do at all teams). Thus the disclaimer. Not that anybody would take advices from a noob such as me.

[Edit] This is response to a post. Hopefully not considered spam.

Sorry HH, I thought you were hinting that I was posting too much here. I've made some more detailed discussion possible over Here

Even if you were not implying it, it would probably be best to keep this strictly for discussing the turn in question, off-linking to relevent detailed arguments for various things.

smacksim: That sounds reasonable if the goal is to have no chance of losing a move with the CP. What are the odds of failing to move into fungus at this point in the game, anyway?

Having played as long as I have I tend not to think too hard about things. I see water in that screenie. If it looks to be coastal and not landlocked I would surely move the CP onto that pod and live with the results. No reason I can see not to build a base by the alien sea.

Enigma_Nova told me that factions with +1 planet will always be able to move into fungus. I tend to disagree. But the question is moot if the Scout patrol makes it, or better, finds a worm and makes it.

Then again, if it looks like more and more fungus to the north after the scout moves, it's trickier. In that case, I'd say go with moving it sw towards the water, not south on the Unity pod.

I would probably explore the pod with our CP in a single player game, yet, here it seems best to get a little safety first. If we were to go for that Unity pod, better to move the CP first, then the scout (if a worm, can follow up).

If the scout does not make it North, then CP to the SW is, at the very least, a chance to build a base on the following turn(s). The scout will make it though

Obstructor, here's what I was referring to when I said popping the pod could slow down our research if we get a tech: (see the 2nd paragraph)

"Tech cost is only recalculated once you complete a tech by your own research, and start on a new tech. Half researching one tech, getting it some other way, and switching to another does not change the tech cost. Also, "surplus research" carries forward to the next tech.

The one exception to the cost increase rule occurs while researching your 1st tech. The cost of your 1st tech is, for some reason, calculated each turn. Thus you should never trade or pod pop, etc. until you have completed the research process at least once."

Browse Apolyton AD-FREE

Consider, though, that we already have the Most Important tech (Ecology), so even if we get tech from a pod, it won't be a disaster. Information Networks or Industrial Base would be a boon, and the other possible techs wouldn't be that bad.

Full PM-box? Change here!

Yep every tech you can skip is like +1 research. Every tech you pick up seems to give you -1 research. The effects are a bit different, but the results are similar in my opinion.

Hrmm Honghu, we seem to be talking an awful lot of strategy in this forum. Oh well if Drogue comes along, you're getting the blame for starting it.

You are going to publish this in your SMAC university anyway aren't you? So it should be common knowledge. This is not to say it isn't already common knowledge for most players in all of the teams.

Plus this is the Gaians.

Ah the sublety. As to the pod, yep, no good for research department, especially before first tech. But we will be stealing most of our tech, right? And HongHu, why don't you rejoin Gaia? We could use you on our side. You can CMN in the global newspaper, perhaps as chief editor. There's plently to do that wouldn't require your absence from the team.

No, not many would believe anyone capable of honorably stepping away from such power. I'd believe ya if you said you were now going to join another faction and wouldn't rattle our plans. But here I go again, cluttering up the turn thread. Have we posted?

Well, I have plans. Short-term, I plan to head north (this is not the consensus, just what I'd prefer to do). Long-term, I plan to play the Gaians more-or-less like I did in Googlie's challenge, though with more caution towards human players. If you want to see what I did in that challenge, you should be able to dig up the thread. I can also post some saves from the game.

Succinctly, I like:
High industry
Lots of cities
Lots of terraformers. A rocky + min bonus may be 7 minerals to someone else, but to me it's 7 terraformers.
Lots of crawlers early, but many get removed to allow boreholes to be worked, and to allow filling in gaps with new bases as satellites make this feasible.
IA -> Env Econ -> MMI -> Fusion
