200 people are in hospitals of Beslan now and another 150 in Vladikavkaz (a pretty big city, nearby).

Local residents caught one of the fleeing terrorists and kicked him, possibly to death.

The toll is going to be high... after all, the special forces didn't do a carefully planned storm, they instead had to charge in momentarily.

Damn. The spetsnaz apparently cornered some of the fleeing terrorists in the south part of the city, but they do again have hostages - an unknown number of adults.

Military officials confirmed "tens of causalties".

The four people who went in to bring out bodies just before the firefight started, one is dead and three wounder.

Sometimes people forget that punishment isn't about the criminal, it's about about society, either protecting itself or exacting vengence. Either way, this fits the bill quite nicely. Let terrorists be torn apart by the mobs they've harmed. It's fitting that a terrorist should end his/her life in terror.

I just talked to a buddy in our special forces, and he said that given what he knows from news coverage, this could be judged as a moderate success for the authorities. Their hand was forced, and they had to act...

Moderate success was the theater crisis, this doesn't seem so. Civilians were also opening fire on terrorists and I heard a high-ranking officer say on TV that they did at one moment hinder the effectivity of special forces. Sure, they had no time to effectively carry out the attack, but there were also other problems such as injured people not getting to ambulances easily. Also, the many rebels that managed to disguise themselves and break out of the perimeter!

Then I guess it's mostly acceptable. They certainly couldn't prevent the explosions. I'm still not sure, though who's to blame for the three groups of rebels still out there. One was shooting back from the school, second trying to flee the city with fighting, third is trying to mix up with the crowd. If they got outside the perimeter, it could be a spetsnaz mistake. Look at all the stuff they had there, tons of soldiers and vehicles.

Latest. One group is still in a small building near the school, barricaded themselves in and are in a firefight with the spetsnaz. Interfax correspondent reported from the school that there over 100 bodies in the sports hall.

And, a female terrorist has been detained.

true. Where were the snipers around the school?? there should have been an iron ring around it... maybe no one expected anyone to escape

I don't know, I saw pictures of people with Dragunovs around there. What they were doing I don't know, but I expect their vision was absolutely obscured. However, with hundreds of Alpha, Spetsnaz and regular military soldiers standing around, a cordon of police and armored vehicles, I wouldn't expect them to let the rebels get out.

Already, more than 500 wounded in hospitals. That's even more than there were hostages, presumably, till they admitted the number was much higher than first reported.
