Hum, sure about the global effect of a happy capitol. I didn't know/think the temple happiness went outside the host city of the capitol.

Neither did I CheckMate.

But on the other hand - I have never looked for it, so I can't say for sure - and we have seen bugs/flaws before in CTP.

Yet we accept the global unhappiness of a capitol falling? Not a bug...

So why would we dismiss global happiness especially early in the game with close set cities where the capitol, as in later parts of the game determines civ happiness?

Correct me if I am wrong but individually cities become unhappy because of distance from capitol, size, hunger, lack of improvements and all the other individual effects that strictly rely on the city itself.
The rest of your civ happiness relies of the capitol and other outside effects, war, clerics, slaves etc...

A bug I would guess no, completely tested not yet, more than an observation yes.

Good point troll

I surmise a lot more goes into civ happiness based on the capitol happiness then we have practiced. Especially early in the game.

Historically capitols in any civilization, thier wealth, temples, markets, improvements etc. Have made or broke the over all strength and growth of that civilization, even in todays standards.

Test it out.

After extensive testing on the temple...Etc factor it is a fact. It is also time limited depending on the configuration of your civ.

It also goes on through other capitol improvements for happiness. So time your improvements wisely...

I was able to increase happiness an average of two points overall 8 out of 10 times. That increase was also seen with other happiness improvements.

Yes - twice.

It works against the city, you infect. But I have not noticed any effect on other cities (spread along traderoutes) as expected.

But - I might simply have tried using it to few times.

I would think with some experienced players, for at least a SLIC expert, in a scenario ...one could say give the Infector powers if a city has a computer then it becomes infected. I would have to defer to a more expert than I at SLIC, but would be kinda kewl, say I infect one city then all cities with Computers also are infected, but I would think Televisions should be used, for at that point in game, gold is plent vs building a Computer in a city, just a thought...

Though I thought this was common sense - Blackice asked me to post this:

Several times when going for a special wonder, some uses to follow you and a race begins.

Now the game tells everybody, when you is close to complete your wonder - not one but two turns before it actually completes. And one of the other "bastards" through all ressources in to come first - and letting you stand there with all your talents for no use.

To avoid this - be nasty. Rushbuy the wonder yourself when there are 3 turns left. Even if that means, that you have to disband some units in the city, building the wonder. Fx reduces one disbanded cavalry the remaining turns with 1 going for Edison Lab (more-or-less the caravantrick from CIV II).

Believe me - it works. I have done it twice recently.

But be aware - some of the others can be real nasty. I have seen Edison Lab being builded in ONE turn - probably have my opponent changed from one wonder to another and then rushbuyed the rest. **** happens

telling from my experiences with the AI players i think this warning depends on the percentage of the construction points for the wonder that are already done. this is what my feeling tells me.

really ??

not exactly. a disbanded unit gives a certain percentage of its production cost for the wonder (or whatever else is being built), i believe 50%.

quote:

some even save a load of units to rushbuild wonders. i rarely spend money on rushbuilding (-buying).
this is also a good way to get rid of obsolete units.
and, as said above, it works with every city production (except infrastructure and capitalization) so consider it whenever you need to urge-build something.

Well, it is much more than 50% - I used 4 cavs in the game Live Wire and got a turn less every time. Same in DoSomePBEM.

Thanks Birdy some of the things we take for granted as experienced players, rookies and experienced players may have not known or forgotten.

Very few players use this strategy yet it is a powerful one. Like Math said it is a good way to advance your civ and get rid of those old useless units.

Reading both Math and Keygens replies.

If so, then it seems like the 50% is "raw" production - and you should add the multiplies from mills and factories. Then it seems to fit "real life" and I can agree to your statements.

This means that you can get back more production than you put in... This could lead to some interesting strategies. It means that once you have a handful of production improvements the best way to build a wonder or anything else expensive is to build a bunch of units first and then disband them...

No - I do not think you will get more out of this that you put into it. You can have other cities to contibute to a certain tasks - but that's all.

Ohhh, maybe. If you have phalanx/legions or something like that and you disband those units in a city equipped with mill, factories, oilref and nukeplant...... then you probably get more out than you put in.

The city you disband any units in should give at least 2x time the raw production before you get more out than you put in.

And I even think, if the unit is build in a city with a mill, then you need not only mill, factory but also oilref in the city you disband the unit in to get more out than you put in.

New Topic-

I almost always build a granary in a city before it reaches size 2. The one exception is my first city; I will usually keep building warriors and I make it my priority to build a granary before it reaches size 3. This is a gamble, because if my warriors don't find any settlers in ruins, my growth is slowed. However, they usually find something good, and it's also very important to me to know the lay of the land before I start massive colonization.

similar with me, david. only that i build 3 warriors first (the first two cost only two turns if i have double forest-river) and then switch to granary in my first city. this usually leaves 2-4 turns before it grows (min wages, max prod, rest for food).
at the last turn at size 1 (which is just in time) i rush buy the granary with the money often found my exploring warriors.
thereafter, i tend to build phalanx, slaver, temple in my capital (if i i found other settlers) and go for building it up, especially if i want an early wonder.
phalanx and slaver can also be imported from other cities, and the temple might also be rush bought.

Not an insult, just a point to ponder my friend. If its scouts your using them for, then good idea except that when you build several well then ythey have to travel overe already swept territory. Maybe good for a while, but think of after maybe 5-6 wearriors building outlying cities and then build warriors there, kinda like concentric cirlces.

Hope this helps!

Peace

This mailexchange is not a strategy (not yet).

But some could make it to

quote:

Uhhmmm - on the other hand, the American slavers prevented me in following my "normal" way for exploring and expansion.

Normally I don't go to war with the closest AI - but I might change my mind after this "success".

But of course one will only be able to do that, when the human enemy is far away and not able to pull a stick between ones legs..... I don't think you would have allowed me to crush the Americans (I am going for every American city now) if you were able to prevent it.....

So far 240.000 american citizens have joined my nation :- ).

So far about 20-25% of my popsize are former americans and is in total a little over Hatchy's, who - as far as I know - have been "allowed" to build his nation without fighting off an agressive neighbour.

is this just a one-time phenomenon or did anyone also experience this.
i started to build a (500PW) farm on a (plains) tile, one turn later re-decided for a (300PW) mine, changed the production, and got the remaining 200 PW BACK !!

anyone else who can confirm this as a rule ?

you can build an advanced farm on top of a regular farm that you bagan building the same turn. The advanced farm will cost 500 instead 700 for the farm and advanced. The advanced farm will also be build in one turn instead of 2. This trick can be used with fisheries and mines too. However if you build a road then place a railroad on top of it the same turn, you will have a railroad the next turn followed by the road you built the turn after.

well, as far as i see it, this is not a bug. you simply get back what you invested when you change your mind.

i would even assume that the 700PW farm speed build bug is an unintented version of this intended feature.
