Our continued friendly relations with CFC are a good thing and we'll stay on this track. We just need to be up to date on our offers and remember that they view our map to be more valuable than theirs and are willing to give more in exchange for our map ... therefore we can trade them techs that aren't exactly even (MM for Math + HBR) and use our WM for their WM to balance out the trade.

If the tech trade becomes impossible due to CDG carrying through, we should still swap maps and let them know that we know our map is slightly more valuable but that we're OK with that and don't mind being generous with them as we trust them and hope that they might be generous in the future with us.

I like MZ's response to CFC's suggestion that we ally ... we can't attack them as CDG is in the way. By stating that it's impossibe we are not forced to make a choice or to blow off CFC with a claim of neutrality. We also subtly suggest that if CDG wasn't in the way, we could help CFC ...

All in all, we're doing fine with these guys. Let's keep on course, not try anything ambitious or greedy, just remain friendly, keep chatting, and be there to act when the sh*t goes down.

The reason they see our map as more valuable is that we have mapped out CDG and part of GCA while they have no clue as to what those two Civs have.

Can we ask them to next research Philosophy? Perhaps if they get Math from CDG they will have time to finnish that before we finnish CoL....

CFC has reported in a chat that they will have HBR (and likely Math from CDG) in 4-5 turns. So we can complete our trade of MM+WM to them for Math+HBR+WM very soon. FortyJ also stated that they will go after Construction next.

They still want to know if we are on board for helping them out with GCA. We are stalling them on that for now.

Regarding the proposed alliance (can be found here)

quote:

Spolis of War

Apolytopn must give up cities captured to Fanatikou and Elucidia. These cities will not be useful to Apolyton. Elucidia and Fanatikou shall share all cities. However any cities Apolyton turns over with only one ressource or Luxury, must be traded to Apolyton for 30 turns after the turn over of the city. Also, if there are any cities that are captured with two luxuries, the second must go to Apolyton for 30 turns. If there are three luxuries, one must go to Apolyton for 30 turns, and the third must either go to Elucidia or Fanatikou for 30 turns.

To this, I would like to say a BIG, FAT NO. Granted, yes the cities are of no use to us, the problem is that the cities are of use to our neigbors, who will undoubtably be our future enemies. If we are even involved in this war (which I doubt we will do), I would much rather disband cities as we go.

Regardless of this though, this treaty is very slim pickings. The only benefits for us is the possibility of captured luxuries... *if* we even capture them. If we don't, well then we are SOL.

I doubt we will agree to this alliance anyway, but consider these issues a stall tactic

WOOOT!!!

The dance has begun down under!

Let's pay close attention to what GCA is doing. They are likely claiming to CFC that the Iron belongs to GCA even though we KNOW GCS has another source. GCA might be saying to CFC and CDG that the Iron they are camping on is their only possible souce...

Something doesn't smell right here. Maybe it's my MP hunch, but uh...

Pieces of info:

GCA is declaring war on CFC - you don't bluff like that. With what we know about their intended alliance, GCA is really going to do it and this is probably their excuse. That means GCA has been planning this for a wee bit, and probably has a significant military presence. However- that means THEY ARE CONFIDENT THAT THE IMMORTALS NORTH OF THEM ARE NOT COMING SOUTH. Confident enough to start a war on the other front, in fact.

Indirectly, CDG has just polled our military readiness by asking if we can assist in a war against GCA. They just ran a unit past our warrior screen to see what was up there- and now they have a unit sitting by our Horse site to see what we'd do up there.

I think there exists the possibility that the real alliance here is CDG/GCA, that GCA is confident they can take down CFC... and that CDG may in fact be eyeing us - RIGHT NOW. Think about it- GCA is launching a war with its BACK to *the* offensive Ancient Times unit. CDG just locked down the ONLY possible route of interference in any actions they might take against us. We also recieved a really bizzare treaty offer that effectively questioned our military readiness..

GCA's move feels funny. Let's watch CDG very carefully. Either CDG has hoodwinked GCA into total strategic surprise when the Immortals strike south, or GCA knows something that CFC and we don't about CDG. Dominae may get his defensive war before all is said and done.

On the other hand, this could be a desperate gambit for GCA to get some breathing room; for all we know they're boxed-in down there, and CDG/CFC are going for the kill. I'd REALLY like to get a map trade with GCA in the immediate future. It would tell us a lot tactically, and give away very little of importance for us.

It's possible that GCA is teamed with CDG, but that would mean a near back-stabbing by CDG against CFC was about to take place.

I don't think GCA is looking for an all out offensive against CFC, just that one town near the iron and then they will send (probably already on the way) a settler to lay claim to their SECOND Iron. I think GCA has enouhg units at the CFC town near the Iron to be able to take it out. I believe then that GCA will back off and play defensively once they have that Iron in their possesion.

The big play here is that GCA is tring to deny Iron to CFC. It may be the only source left on the landmass that isn't claimed. We have two (one of which is unknown by the other Civ's); CDG has two and GCA has one and is trying to steal another from CFC. That's a total of 6 Irons on one land mass with 8 Civ's in the game. I highly doubt there's another Iron on this land mass for CFC besides the one next to them now.

If this is only a war about Deny CFC of Iron, we should connect our second Iron so we can trade with CFC. After MM and trade of WM with CFC we should be able to trade with harbours.

Interesting idea! GCA takes their iron and won't count on swordsmen - behind their backs, we're providing CFC with Iron.

Problem is - GCA can see this in the Diplomacy screen, I believe (maybe after establishing an embassy at Poly or at CFC).

I'm not sure whether a clear path along the coast will become visible after we trade maps. I'm also not sure whether CFC has a coastal city in which they can build a harbor.

I'm sure we wouldn't have that second Iron hooked up for quite a bit, at least until we begin our attack of CDG, At that time GCA will not see that as such a friendly manuever, especially if it had it's eyes on CDG's land too.

We could send one of our Galley's around to scout CFC's harbor and then offer them the second Iron on the condition that they Ally with us against GCA. This alliance would be activated if GCA made any moves towards us while during or after CDG's destruction.

GCA won't know for sure who is giving CFC the Iron, there's no direct way to know. It would be a very good guess, however! We could help CFC claim that another team found it's way acrross to CFC and traded it to them, or if CFC has any territory or small islands near them but not explored by GCA, they could claim the Iron came from there.

I'm still VERY, VERY unclear on why exactly we want to assist CFC over GCA. I'd MUCH rather face the War Elephants of a Commercial/Religous civ than the RIDERS of a Military/Industrious civ. Besides, we know that long-term, CFC is probably our biggest threat strategically speaking; I wouldn't mind seeing them go out early, so that if nothing else, we have bragging rights over them.

I really think those three powers are pretty balanced right now. We should just stand clear and let the fur fly, and then gobble up CDG when the doomsday clock reaches 0 on our own timetable.

My thinking exactly.

GCA cripples CFC. CDG cripples GCA, and weaken themselves in the process. We swoop in to claim the prize. Yum if it goes down that way.

It is as I said before - for the moment anyway we MUSTN'T agree to any sizeable military endeavour. If we are really given no option, we must send no more than a tiny token group to sabotage roads (that will not harm us) at most. Though I believe we can avoid even this. Give whatever help is demanded that we cannot avoid without getting seriously involved ourselves, but we must be the isolationists in this. We must be the America during WWI (I believe) - it must not concern us until we are ready.

Draft Proposal of both Map and Tech trade to CFC (CFC confirmed earlier today that they have Math and HBR)

quote:

APOLYTONIA AND FANATIKOU MAP AND TECHNOLOGY TRADE DEAL

The nations of Apolyton and Fanatikou, in the spirit of maintaining a lasting friendship and mutually beneficial relationship, hereby agree to the following trade of world maps and technologies:

- Apolyton shall trade its World Map as well as the technology of Map Making
- Fanatikou shall trade its World Map as well as the technologies of Mathematics and Horseback Riding.

To ensure an even trade, all initial map trades between Apolyton and Fanatikou/GCA will take place on the same turn, as to ensure neither nation obtains the map of its enemy during this transaction. This will be accomplished by simultaneously gifting its world map to both, and receiving Fanatikou’s and GCA’s maps on the following turn.

The mechanics of this trade are as follows:

1) Upon ratification of this agreement, Apolyton shall gift its World Map to Fanatikou.

2) Upon receiving Apolyton’s gifted World Map, Fanatikou shall offer to Apolyton its own World Map as well as the technologies of Mathematics and Horseback Riding,

3) Upon receiving Fanatikou’s offer, Apolyton shall include the technology of Map Making and re-send the offer (accepted) to Fanatikou.

4) Fanatikou will accept the offer thus completing the trade.

Furthermore:

- Once Apolyton obtains the world maps of Fanatikou and GCA, Apolyton is bound by this treaty to refrain from trading its updated map to either Fanatikou or GCA for the duration of the war between these two as well as Elucidia during the same time frame.

This treaty shall come into effect the turn that Apolyton gifts its World Map simultaneously to the receiving parties. Any breach of this treaty will be considered illegal and reported to the United Nations.

-Master Zen
Deputy Foreign Minister of Apolyton

We have formally agreed to trade CFC Mapmaking for Horseback Riding. They've agreed to give us Math if CDG falls through. They've also agreed to give us a good deal on our next tech exchange in return for this good deal.

We have tentatively offered them Code of Laws + Philosophy for Construction. We just need to discuss it a bit and send a formal offer to them.
