980 AD: We're 'Moderate' and missing some important techs (like Banking, which just about everyone else knows ) We have most cities poised to celebrate, but few of them have the food to actually grow.
The road to fast growth lies in trade, and bigger cities will get us bigger trade payoffs. So the key here is to grow the six cities we do have, and try to scout out a 7th for OnS.
Accordingly... let's lay some groundwork. Changed tax rate to 2.1.7. We don't need more than 10% lux to keep everyone happy, for now. And 4 of our cities are stuck at size 8, anyway, and the others weren't growing.
I wonder how OldnSlow feels about Sparta? Coastal city, has wonders (Cope's, LH). Hmmmmm.... it might be fun to send a Diplomat there, to inquire about costs.
Production changed in SKJ to Trireme. We need a better way to get ships to Egypt. Unfortunately we have only 2 port cities, so happiness will become an issue.
We also only have 4 Settlers... we really need more.
1000: Discover Engineering, begin work on Invention. Leo isn't a great wonder with as few cities as we have, but it would still help, IMO (boat and Settler upgrades).
Start/change to Settlers in Pax and Git's Hole, to bring our Settler total to 6.
Increment some stuff. Science=8 turns.
French learn Navigation.
1020: Increment a bit more. Babylonians learn Medicine; start Shakespeare. Egyptians and French swap some techs and make peace.
1040: More incrementing.
1060: Discover that Sparta, with Lighthouse and Copes, can be had for 501 g, and an 'incident'
1080: We contact the Greeks, who are Supreme. They demand 650 g for peace. We refuse. War results. Sparta bribed for 507 g, netting us Lighthouse, Copernicus's Observatory, 3 units (Archer, Vet Trireme, Catapult), and Astronomy. Hopefully we can defend the city
I now have both 'my' cities
Greeks demand 200 g, Elephant attacks our Archer, Archer wins, becomes vet
1100: Jack up taxes a bit, to 3.1.7, in order to be able to fund our ambitious building schemes
1120: Catapult kills Ellie near Sparta. City walls rushed in Sparta.
1140: Beads>Pi-Ramesses 140 g, Silver>Pi-Ramesses 112 g.
Palace rushed in Pax STYOM.
Proto-Shipchain in place
Egyptians learn Invention.
1160: Invention discovered; researching Gunpowder.
French learn Economics. Egyptians are almost done Shakespeare.
1180: Beads>Pi-Ramesses 82 g, Gold>Pi-Ramesses 56 g, Silver>Alexandria(d) 80 g , Spice>Alexandria 52 g.
Before departing office, STYOM renames Sparta to Six's Torch.
*******************
Could have been better, I guess. We're about halfway to Gunpowder, and we have 3 Triremes ferrying Caravans to Egypt. That's the part I like (I figured out why the return on Silver was so low last turn... I stupidly forgot to put all of Lago's workers on rivered tiles )
Beware the Greeks... they are hassling our cities a bit. Warrior S of Lagomorphia, and there are a couple of Catapults near Six's Torch. We have walls there, and a vet Archer, and Catapult/Horse team, so hopefully those enemies are manageable.
We're still Spotless and Moderate and the Greeks are still Supreme. I realize I took a risk by bribing Sparta The Glorious Beacon of Most Wise and Excellent Consul STYOM. But as I saw it, the Lighthouse was too good to pass up, especially with Cope's as a bonus. Moreover, the Greeks were already 'Hostile' to us. If my successor chooses, he may want to try to make peace with the Greeks... try to do so when the money supply runs low, as the Greek demands run to the extravagant.
There are a couple of Food 'vans in Pax - perhaps they could be used to build Leo? I'd feel better with some upgraded defenders in our cities.
I didn't build any aqueducts, but the money is still there to do so.
And to Old n Slow - I thought of holding off on taking our shiny new Lighthouse city and letting you do it... but the temptation was too great. That said, we have 510 g in the coffers; perhaps something else will materialize in your turns.

1180 (0) -- talk to Egypt & trade away poly & Mono for Bank & Nav. RB a couple of Crux.
1200 (1) (Memphis completes Shake’s; Chin, Fr, Bab all abandon) Happiest -- we’re #5! We love in Pax STYOM. Throughout the next few turns, units see action in Six’s torch & Lago -- usually with a kill or two per turn each.
1220 (2) (Chin starts Magellan; Fr start Leo’s)
1280 (5) (Egypt starts Leo’s) Discover Gun, opt for Feud
1300 (6) 4 new muskets appear (and a few more afterwards next turn) SKJ Coal (n) to Pi R = 74; Gits Hides (n) to Pi R = 114
1340 (8) Spare Oval Hides (n) to Memphis = 74
1360 (9) Lago completes barracks -- Six’s torch might need one as well, but we seem to be holding quiet there for the last two turns, so we’ll wait. Lago gems (d) to Helio = 216. Hmmm with a little push, Egypt declares war. Barbs land north of Pi-r (now size ten & looking very juicy.)
1380 (10) discover Feud, opt for Demo. Land two Crux & two muskets onto Egyptian shore.
OK, OK, I had ten turns & still was too slow to take my city -- Egypt has a couple of yummy ones -- Pi-R looks larger than anything else around (and is on a river) and Memphis has two wonders -- tempting, tempting.
