Monk, I'm not being serious at all about the age, politics or name thing, that last post was an attempt at self-irony. As for conservatism in general, I acknowledge that I did attempt to force my opinions on you all, and I apologize for that. I'll reread the post and see just how rude I were.
I'm having the exact same conversation with my brother whenever we play a board game. I often want to change the rules and he rarely budges an inch. How do you reach a good compromise with those positions?

Changing the rules negates the advantage of experience and learned wisdom. We delude ourselves when we think we can "make up" the rules of life as we go along. There are indeed absolute rules, both natural and human, that we discover or ignore to our benefit or peril.

Change -- whether it is the “rules” or something less basic -- has another parameter -- AMOUNT of change. Change forces adaptation, and invites new modes of thinking. Sometimes this offers growth, sometimes frustration, sometimes paralysis. But it is the amount of change compared to the greater environs that generates the delightful thought of something slightly new vs. something totally different.
The something slightly new (a fresh map, different events, some randomness with some variables) sparks interest within a familiar context. The something radically new may spark the same set of feelings (after all Civ II still has the basics of building/growing & use of resources; offense, defense, etc.), but the degree of familiarity and the cost of re-learning affects the equation. Specific experience may no longer be as valuable, but general experience still applies.
(If I wax any more, we’ll start looking like statues.)

Sorry that you've all had to wait until today, but I was off work ill yesterday so couldn't post the game or log. I did manage to feel so bad that I was practising my Civ skills most of the day while my girlfriend was out, but that doesn't improve the (small) blunder I made at the end of these turns. Intrigued? Read on....
1 AD (Preturn) – Change map to suit my whims.
20 – (1) Madrid builds Great Wall. Two empty triremes exploring! Both need to be crewed.
40 – (2) More ship movement. Buy 4 shields towards Scylla’s phalanx.
60 – (3) Charybdis finishes phalanx. Fortified & production changed to dip for exploration.
80 – (4) Ceremonial Burial discovered. Monarchy will be in 18 turns!
100 – (5) Nothing.
120 – (6) Nothing.
140 – (7) Troy builds settlers, but this leaves only one shield to build the temple I have planned. Scylla builds phalanx and starts on dip.
160 – (8) Trireme with settlers and warriors sets off to the northwest, to found a 2 whale city. Troy grows again and now has 3 shields to play with.
180 – (9) Nothing
200 – (10) Nothing
220 – (11) Nothing
240 – (12) Nothing
260 – (13) Zimbabwe builds KRC.
280 – (14) Charybdis builds dip who jumps on board the trireme waiting there. Starts on temple. Circe founded on a hill with two whales to the northwest.
300 – (15) Nothing
320 – (16) Scylla changed from dip to trireme.
340 – (17) Nothing
360 – (18) Chinese discover Philosophy first.
380 – (19) Monarchy discovered. I start on Pottery because our cities will do nothing without harbours. I was very tempted to choose Trade, but we can’t use caravans on the other civs anyway (wherever they may be). Troy builds its temple and starts on a library. Circe finishes warrior and starts on temple. Next Oedo year is 460. Sorry about that – I should have switched Troy to more sea squares to speed up the discovery by a year.
400 – (20) Beijing builds Cop’s. The Troy library has only one round of shields collected so feel free to change it. I noticed that Charybdis is going into disorder so have hired Elvis there. It’s still a long wait until revolution though.
Well I have cocked up the Oedo progression a little, and both triremes are miles away searching for new lands. Both have crew on baord though - one with a dip and the other with a warrior. I just picked the warrior to pop huts with really, but if it gets barbs on its first go then it won't last long. The dip should have better luck, but I can't remember where else I was building another boat to get more settlers out. I didn't discover any more land, and felt at the end that I would have been better off sending the boats east and west rather than north and west. This is only because of the shape of the map, but maybe I'm just second-guessing STYOM and it could go all awry.
Good luck to the next admiral!

Considering how far behind you are in tech, Marco Polo might make more sense now...
Then again, if you are hoarding your shields, Magellans will be more important.
