For 1919 and beyond Remove this text

What do you think of these quotes from that S&T mag article on a 1919 offensive? This is probably old hat to the Panzermeisters out there.

quote:
Though enormous and heaviliy armed, the first German tank, the A7V, was too cumbersome and unreliable to be an effective weapon.... The German LKI, LKII, and LKIII tanks were, in many ways, an outgrowth of the British Mark A medium tank. The LKI was a prototype light tank with a rotating machinegun turret. The LKII refined the design and would have featured either a forward firing 57mm gun or a turreted machinegun. An overly ambitious production order was placed for 580 of the tanks, but it is certain at least some of the vehicles would have been ready to oppose the allies in 1919, leading to perhaps major tank-versus-tank battles.

The LKIII was to have been even further advanced, with a turret mounted 57mm gun.

Thank you fairline, I wasn't aware of the poor performance of the A7V (though with that design, I was already suspicious...)

The site above posted how many of the Mark series tanks were produced between June 1915 and July 1918.

And with the artillery, shut up I just like the armored vehicles

Hmmm, what do ya say Curt? Think you might include this hypothetical tank? Or is the game balanced enough with the German Storm Troopers?

I just might keep the STs as the tank equivalent.

Also the massive Krupps gun is a match for any iron wagon!

Here's the Mark IV Curt - plain camo, British markings and a captured German version.

Just a thought: if you really must have German tanks, how about an event that gives the Germans captured Mark IVs conditional on the loss of British tanks?

As Case said, the Germans fielded more captured tanks than their own designs. Having said that, they used very few tanks of any kind, so you are probably better off sticking with the stormtroop / heavy arty idea.

Boco: interesting German tank sites. That light tank is almost a direct copy of a Whippet. I wonder how many they could have produced in 1919, though? The Geman high command seemed to be almost entirely disinterested in producing armour.

Yeah, great tanks

Just a quibble - the tanks look larger then they are in life. I was astonished a few years ago when the Australian War Memorial put its' Mk IV on display: while I was expecting one of the hulking monsters from wartime propaganda, in reality the tank was quite small, and was actually much smaller then the hull of the Centurian tank on display next to it!

They aren't supposed to be in scale with WW2 or modern unit gfx - the thing is the Mark IV tanks were much bigger than either a Whippet or FT-17, which was a comparatively small 2-man tank. As I drew the FT-17 rather large, I've had to draw the Mark IV bigger (although still not in scale).

Apologies for gratuitously posting something I've just posted in the graphics thread, but hopefully this will illustrate. The Whippet was 20ft long, the Mark IV 26ft and the FT-17 a puny 16ft.

Good point. The Australian War Memorial also has an FT-17 on display, and it's smaller then my car! (which is a rather wimpy Mitsubishi Mirage Hatchback).

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

The RN was the first service to use the Rolls-Royce Armoured car, GoPostal; to be more specific it was the Royal Naval Air Service who initially used them to fetch downed pilots from the front line and enemy territory, and later carried out patrols with them. The RNAS continued to operate them until they were absorbed into the new tank corps.

Winston Churchill, who was then First Lord of the Admiralty (ie the government minister in charge of the Navy), was the main driving force behind the development of tanks as well; these had been dropped by the army after early development and it was Churchill who carried on development of 'land ships'. Tanks went into service exclusively with the army though, first as part of the Machine Gun Corps and subsequently the Tank Corps.

What is the effect of city walls on the scenerio? Are you using the old idea of city walls being used to stop fast units from gaining and advantage by giving inf the ability to ignore city walls?

I forget which sceenrio it was, but there was one in which the graphic for really small towns without walls, those towns most in danger of beign wiped out by war included flames and smoke to represent a town under siege.
