Pissy? That's me when I'm b*tching about something stupid that someone has already done. The above was me aggressively expressing my disfavor with the idea.

As you may notice, there are some ideas that I dislike, and some ideas that I aggressively dislike. This idea that we should go "choke" CDG is one that I aggressively dislike. I don't believe that it is the best thing for us to do, strategicly, nor do I believe that our allies motives for wanting us to do it are entirely innocent.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

We should do absolutely nothing that would tip CDG off or cause them to even worry even one iota! For 10 shields they spend on Military we will have to spend nearly 17 to just come even with them since the defender has the advantage. Through in some walls and our costs go to 22 shields! Of course PAL will help to offset this, but do we want something left over for PAL after the CDG war is over? I mean we may not go after PAL, but one can never know if they would come after us. A stong military won't always prevnt an invasion, but it may make your assumed ally think more than twice about coming after you.

Don't you just hate it when others so ably express your own opinions?

We need to restrain the agressive tendancies of PAL. Perhaps in regular MP an agressive tack is a good one to take, but our effort, I am convinced, against CDG will be best helped if we continue our officially neutral stance while we prepare for the attack.

To draw a parallel, I look to the Monty Python/Monkey conflict in the PTWDGII. Our original plan was to go along with Monkey as if we were friends, only to attack while they were unsuspecting, a strategy that worked admirably well, in my humble opinion. Our initial attack only ground to a halt because Monkey was stronger than we had anticipated, and becuase of bad luck in regard to the disappearence of the only iron on our continent. In CDG, though, we face a weak opponent without it's UU.

Hmmm...

Actually, Monkey knew something was going on.
We just did not think anyone would be crazy enough attack Carthage in the ancient age.
So.. we knew Python was up to something, we warned CoD a number of times to be careful. We just got the intended target wrong.

Python didnt fool us, we fooled ourselves in believing that the Carthage was untouchable & that our tech alliance would keep war away until the other nations were discovered.

But what gave you away ??
It had nothing to do with any aggressive tendencies. Just a lack of friendly correspondence.

Cutting off diplomatic channels for fear of giving something away, is sometimes just as bad as going outright hostile.

I am surprised CDG arent building up their military. PAL are hostile, and our diplo work has been terrible.

That is true. We should try to start a regular correspondence with CDG if at all possible - just a 'Hello, how are things?' type of message every once in a while.

Maybe we could even play CDG fears of PAL - get them to direct a major part of their military toward PAL, while we come in through the back door.

Ill take this one step further.

When the PAL SoD is approaching, we can say our SoD approaching is to "help".

We just dont tell them who we are planning to help.

However, we need to watch ourselves. If we start to play CDG a lot, it could, and probably will back fire. How do we have a SoD all of a sudden to protect CDG? If we are sending the SoD at a time that we both enter at the same time, why would we do that?

Thats why you need to time this pefectly Nuke

My guess is CDG will see the PAL SoD first. They are currently playing "CDG delay the PAL settler" as we speak somewhere north of where the Ivory is along the coast due north of the CDG capitol.

So CDG does has sentinels posted to the north, which makes sense because PAL has been pretty aggressive.

So they tell us a SoD is on the way or we "happen to see it" and tell them.

They ask for help. We tell them its on the way.

It can be worked.

Basically PAL is favorable to trading with CDG past the Republic deal.

New corrospondence up in PAL thread.

They will have a slave ready for us in a few turns, "for trade", Im hoping it will be a token trade from our side but Im waiting for them to say what they want as opposed to my suggesting a proposal. Because if they essentially propose a "give away", we are of course going to take it.

Also there divison of the continent seems to be different than ours.

Discuss in the how do we split the continent with PAL thread.

Then Im going to tell them as far as we know, they have all our techs and we have all there techs except Map making which we would like for them to hold and transfer to us just as we finish reasearching Currency.

I will also tell them we are doing 50 turn research on currency to build up a gold reserve for rushing, and that could change as we anticipate a Golden Age trigger during the CDG extermination.

Am I missing anything here? What about mathematics, I cant remeber if PAL has that or not? Is that still an outstanding tech trade?????

This is based on the Latest Turn Thread and the Tech Plans Post Philosophy Thread

We've given PAL all of our techs at this point. The only tech we're missing is Mapmaking.

CDG is also missing techs that follow Masonry and Wheel, like Math and HBR.

Share this info with PAL, and ask them to give us continued updates on the blockade situation.

I'm surprised that CDG hasn't come to us about it yet.

i had a conversation with F-P tonight.

I told him where the CDG cities were.

We briefly discussed the border and he wanted to chat about it sometime soon.

We discussed the barb situation.

IMPORTANT: The impression I got was it was no big deal having our unit on the mountain watching. I think they wanted to park there but will park on the western mountain instead.

PAL would do better with a happyness improvement instead of the pyramids, but it is their call, not ours. Let them waste all those pop points - although if managed correctly, those pop points can be used to great advantage. But the best way is to pop rush, and for that they need to have a different gov't than republic.

They would probably poprush a lot, given that they have so many teeming hordes already. I think they are in pretty fine position - loads slaves from barb camps, lots of cities already and a good amount of good land too. We need to be firm on settlement issues IMO - from our perspective we don't want to be left behind, and although they will end up developing faster than us due to their pop we at least need to ensure we have a roughly equal share of decent land. And what we need to push to them is that we need to be roughly equal to be more efficient - 2 Palaces and FPs are far more useful when working together than one of each, and if we are equal partners in this alliance as FP continues to stress we should share the land rather than let the firstcomer have it all.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

I wrote the following email to F-P to get discussions going and to attempt to keep the alliance real and dissuade them from stabbing us in the back:
quote:

FP,

1) Borders:

We've mentioned in chat where we want the border to be. We want it on the narrow strip of land between the two large landmasses, somewhere just south of Crudetown.

You need to send us your proposal for a border, and do so soon.

We can then correspond and meet in chat if needed. Frankly, my team's diplomacy department has been dropping the ball a lot lately, and I won't be free to chat until Tues or Weds night, so let's get things going now.

2) The War on CDG:

Plan to take Sven's Fjord, Reyjavak, and the capital. We will take the other 3 cities. You may hold them or raze them, your call. But we feel that speed and a blitz mentality is the best approach for efficiently wiping these guys out.

At this time CDG *still* does not possess The Wheel or Masonry. We will try to find out what they're researching.

3) The Relationship between us:

Right now we could kill CDG by ourself. Their development has been slow and clumsey and other than their practice of building vet units, they seem to pose no signifigant threat. Thus, I need to strongly caution your team about building too many military units. You should slow or stop your buildup and focus on temples, libraries, courthouses, and markets.

Why? I could go into the economics and the sheilds and commerce wasted by having an unweildy and expensive army sitting around for nothing, but I'm sure you know that. If your military is too big it's a waste AND more importantly it's a threat.

What really trouble us is that your military will be positioned right next to us, and members of your team are going to call for an attack on us. It's inevitable. It's in your blood and psyche. Your nation is so damn powerful right now and your people know that. The posts will come down saying, "Why don't we just kill Poly and move onto round 2?" And you're going to find it hard to ignore that.

Right now our nations are at average strength to each other, and that's fine for the present peace, but maintaining such a high military strength is already causing us to be over our support values and keeping up with PAL is going to keep us going over, and cause us to ultimately waste commerce as we keep up as the game moves on.

After CDG falls there's going to continue to be an arms race. Our status as the little dog to your big dog doesn't help us sleep well at night. So long as the potential threat remains, we will be in arms race mode.

My point is this: You are in a better position to control the tensions that will ultimately rise between us. We do not pose any sort of threat to you, but you clearly pose a threat to us. That road you're building poses a VERY real threat to us. Your messages protesting us watching you build the road and trying to mislead us about barb farming clearly pose a threat to us. The little hairs on the back of my neck are sticking straight up, and my spidey sense is tingling.

What am I asking? First off, you guys should seriously consider abandoning the Poly Invasion Highway. If you want a trade route we can build a harbor or build one after CDG is toast. Right now, we have not linked up our extra lux, we don't plan to anytime soon (we have a ton of higher worker priority tasks), and our cities are not at the size that we need a 3rd lux.

Second, you guys should consider building cities NW of Psitalongrad where there's better land and less corruption, than building them down here by us. You could also build south of Thumptown. You guys have got to be well over your OCN. I know that denying land to an enemy is common practice but we're NOT the enemy (I hope). We need land for future growth and even though our growth is much slower than yours, we will continue to expand. We'd also like some breathing room between us, to keep the tensions down.

Third, Build the Great Lighthouse. Change your focus to exploration and science, so that we can get to the other civs' land faster in case we have to force an invasion. Get ahead on the tech game so that we can both get into the middle ages (we give you our free tech) and we can tear off ahead of the other civs.

Right now we are going forward with our plans, but the reservations are very real and the suspicions are genuine. We are becoming nervous about attacking CDG and being partnered with a much more powerful team that has a cut-throat military mindset. We are not asking you to do anything that could possibly endanger your people, instead we are asking you to think and plan long-term for the last stage of this game (where we work together to eliminate one of the distant teams), and that we work together long-term to prosper in the bigger game that will occur after this one. Killing CDG is a foregone conclusion, but us staying allied is not. We need to work on the latter.

The payoff for not backstabbing us isn't just keeping a good reputation, it's also keeping a good friendship. I think it's a good test for us. If we make it peacefully through the CDG war, we will have learned to better trust each other, and we will both have more confidence in the long-term viability of this relationship. And most importantly, we will have a devoted friend and ally in the main game that follows this one.

So, please send us a border proposal in the next few days. We can then meet and chat about it perhaps Weds? But also consider my requests. Our team responds to your actions. You are the leader in this alliance. We will be either put at ease or put under pressure by your actions, despite your actual intentions. The ball is in your court.

Thanks for getting the ball rolling with PAL.

I'm not entirely sure being that open with PAL will work - it'll either make them open up with a kinder position toward us, solidify any anti-APO sentiments by making us seem distrustful, give them ideas they didn't have prior, or just fly in one proverbial ear and out the other while they do what they want. Or, maybe, it's later and I'm more tired than I thought I was.

I figure that if they're going to attack us, they're going to attack us. We can't really talk them out of it.

We only have a chance if there's some amongst them that are on the fence about it. If those who are either pro-Poly or undecided learn that we're aware of the threat, prepared for it, and intentionally keeping our military strength on par with theirs, they may be able to talk the others out of it or even scuttle the plans.

F-P's response to the Togas letter is posted in the topped FA thread.

In the future I believe we should discuss such a letter before sending it out. I haven't commented on it up to this point but I was not in agreement with the tone. My guess is now at least some of the MP guys are saying where the heck did that come from?

And the question I have is what in the answer just doesn't make sense?

This isn't a CDG or a CGN we are dealing with here. Its the cream of the MP world and some dam fine Civ players. They are a very calculating bunch and I believe they are convinced an alliance with us almost ensures there continuation into the next game. AND friendly relations with one of the best teams in the CIV world, us.

They have time and time again done things to win our trust. Im not saying we should roll over and just go along with PAL, but maybe just maybe we should consider doing something to win there trust every once in a while.

They are our allies after all.

Ill go back to "dropping the ball" some more now.
