Ultimately, we have no beef with GCA nor should we. They've played a very good game and been very respectful and courteous to us. We have nothing against them personally.
War tends to flare up passion and ill-will. Ultimately, that can lead to teams throwing the game to another team just to be spiteful. Other than us risking losing this war and losing the game, we also risk that our fighting this war could make a 3rd party stronger.
I prefer us taking as noble and respectful a tone as possible. We're already breaking the NAP with these guys, we don't need to insult or annoy them any more than necessary. I don't mind trashtalking between buddies over meaningless games, but we're not buddies with GCA, and this game is far from meaningless.
I know it may seem fun to us to throw in some insults and jokes at their expense, but diplomaticly it just makes things worse. Even in warfare we need to try not to burn bridges and try not to damage relationships to such an extent that they are impossible to repair. I know we may think that we can throw away our relationship with GCA but we may be wrong, something unexpected could happen, and we could desire to end this war prematurely.
Let's keep things as civil and cordial and formal as possible.

I agree with Togas to an extent, but only to an extent.
Humor is not bad. Well designed/placed humor can help take the edge off what is going to be a situation that can create hard feelings. Humor at their expense or at the wrong time would be very bad.
Im in favor of including some friendly humor (BFM's joke is along those lines) that they can appreciate. I'm not in favor of taking it too far or doing so once they start losing. Maybe the declaration of war isn't the best place for it though, maybe something less formal like a private message.
In any case, we should avoid at all costs making it personal.

Class, gentlemen (and ladies?) class.
A Big Ten team does not speak in jokes to the hapless victims they are about to trounce when they play some junior college in some speed bump of a game on the way to bigger and better things.
When Arsenal is about to play some team from Lower Volta, they do not demean the competition. They build them up. That way, when they have disposed of the locals and are long gone, they are remembered well. They treat the local team with respect, and behave professionally. They earn respect and admiration in return
It is the trash talkers who are remembered with malice. They are the ones that everyone will wish to see defeated, eventually. They are the players who people love to remind of their dropped balls, interceptions, and own goals.
Let us have some class. Then, when and if we win, we will not have made so many inveterate enemies as we may have gained a few friends.

Who do you think CGN will believe, it's hated enemy Apolyton, or GCA, who had been a challange to our dominance as far as points go (and CGN seems to think points are very important). Mongoose has already said that many over there think we scratched off CDG, just imagine what our rep is even before we even have contact.

CGN will believe what they want believe, regardless. But, they do know that Apolyton is a force to reckon with;just on reputation alone. I feel that if we tell CGN that GCA was responsible for the destruction of CDG and that we only performed a mercy killing, with CDG's blessing, then they will believe that. As far as our war with GCA and our breaking of the NAP with GCA...There's no way around that other than to explain that since GCA took out CDG, was going after CFC next (during CDG's war) we then felt we had to intervene to prevent GCA from getting to strong and coming after us next. Of course we were looking our for our best interests, but we were not just our for blood or extreme conquest's.

Just for the record: I am not advocating any form of trash talking. There is a difference in well place humor in good taste and trash talking. However, I'll concede the point that a dry formal declaration with no further official communication cannot hurt us diplomatically (more than the war itself does anyways), but that an attempt at humor gone awry can. I'll also concede the point that it'd be hard to determine beforehand how they would interpret any joke sent their way. So, I'll grudgingly consider it a dead issue and support just sending a formal declaration and nothing else.

Ok, people, we need ideas on how to deal with the Mapmaking for Currency trade.
Here's my thoughts:
1) We just do it. No questions, no comments, no "acting weird". We hope that they don't put it to use against us in the war and that our giving it freely is a sign to them that we don't have any hostile intentions ... because if we DID have hostile intentions, why would we be trading them this tech?
2) We tell them, "Sorry, but we don't need Currency. We got it in a goodie hut (they can tell that we already have Currency in their diplo screen). Perhaps we can sell you MM or trade it to you for, say, Monarchy + gold? (or some other suitable trade).
Ultimately, they will not be pleased if we take this route but, really, what can they do about it? We're going to attack them anyhow in 7-10 turns. We wouldn't want to make them mad, but we should ultimately shrug off the decline in our relations this move would cause.
3) Any other ideas??

Hmm, I just read the correspendence thread, and I saw WhiteBandit has sent a letter to GCA which states they should make peace with CFC.
I don't understand this, I thought it was decided to let those nations be in war with each other. Has this been sent because we are afraid GCA will be overrunning CFC quickly? I don't think that is really so bad, their troops will be far away from their homeland, meaning we can easily overrun them.
Could someone be so kind to explain this action to me?
Thanks |
From what I have read sofar in the Brainstorming that when for several hours in chat last night, this would appear to be the best option. The reasons:
To keep CFC and GCA at war with each other, so that the majority of GCA's Army is away from home.
To have a reason not to immedeately honor our tech trade agreement with GCA, i.e. the mapmaking trade, so they don't have galleys and try to pull an Inchon/Inchoff on us while we are attacking their core.
To keep CFC in the war by delaying events over their, enough to allow CFC to fortify their Iron city and get a few more units in the feild. Part of this reasoning is because, If CFC makea peace with GCA, what in the way will GCA demand in the way of Techs. The critical techs that we don't want them to get are: Construction - for the Great Wall, Mapmaking - for galleys (see above) & Feudalism - for unit upgrades and access to Sun Tzu. We will have no real control over what techs are traded as peace terms, if CFC does make peace with GCA.
This is really the only way that we can try to keep all of these things from happening, while we are on countdown to our war. Remember, even 7 to 10 turns can be a long time, when dealing with others at war, anything can happen.
