Let's see...
Darekill, I'd greatly appreciate it if you did handle LL diplomacy. I'll all for securing a NAP with them, just in case. Bring up the possibility of a WM trade, for good measure.
Sent to Arrian:
quote: Arrian,
In regard to your war plan, our C.O.WAR.D chief DaveMcW has made two suggestions, both of which I believe merit a little thought.
-We might not need Silkfest at this point. There's little we can do without the ability to upgrade anything, except for our own faster movement though the area.
-CoD horsemen should stay close to our swords, if possible. Since the swordmen's value has jumped due to the lack of iron, we should try to preserve them as best we can, using the horses to soften the Numbidian Mercenaries up.
In other news, we've met up with an LL galley. They send greetings, along with an offer for a tech purchase. This is what they said:
quote: What about tech cost X 12? ie:
Myst....48 gold
Cons...240 gold |
We're thinking that it's a good deal - we certainly can afford both the prices they're asking. Any thoughts on that sort of trade?
We also plan to ask LL for a NAP, simply to keep them out of our affairs when the Monkey Wars begin.
Engineering also sounds like a solid plan to me. Removing the river movement restriction will certainly help in our war effort, and we have a good fill of luxes at the moment.

Nice job, Darekill.
From Arrian:
quote: Octavian,
Dave makes some good points. I always kinda wondered why you guys wanted a southern barracks town. I figured upgrades were part of it, but also maybe a base to heal at, but with the iron gone it doesn't make much sense. Plus, with that gold hill, we're actually getting some revenue from that city!
I assume, then, that you guys will not be building us a city at Ciao4441, and we should reroute our settler team to that spot?
Do you plan on just going straight at Monkey's city (I always forget its name, the one southwest of Silkfest), or are you going to wait for your workers to road that last jungle tile so you can bring up the catapults? If you plan on waiting, then I think horseman support can be arranged (5-6 horsemen). But I'm not sure delaying the destruction of that hill city is a good idea.
Regarding the tech situation... woah, do you not yet have Mysticism? Did we not sell you that? Hmm, maybe we were planning on packaging that with all the other assorted flotsam and jetsam we put together to equal Construction.
240 gold for Construction isn't that bad, although I'd assume that comes with a NDA, which would mean you couldn't sell it to us. Can you ask about a package deal for the both of us? The original idea was CoD sells Python WC + HBR + Polytheism + whatever else was needed to match the cost of Construction (in research points). So if you can purchase Construction for the both of us, our original deal can still go through. Does that make sense?
Hmm, I just had a radical idea. Let me ask you this: does Python actually *need* construction in the next 20 turns? What if we did this: CoD negotiates with LL to purchase Construction (with Python's gold), with a standard 20-turn NDA (unless I'm mistaken about the NDA thing, I admit I'm assuming they want one... but I'd be shocked if they didn't). This allows CoD to begin Engineering research in 4 turns, when we finish Polytheism. You stay at max cash, we push research as fast as we can, and we do our best to split the cost of Engineering research down the middle. 20 turns later, when the NDA expires, we give you Construction and Engineering. Somewhere in the middle of all that, if the war is going relatively well, you can switch over to republic (unless I missed it and you already did that). Thoughts?
FYI - I will be on vacation all week next week. Basically, starting this evening, I will not have internet access for a full week. So please send messages to Cort Haus until my return. He plays the turns anyway.

To Arrian & Cort Haus:
quote: Note: just to be sure, the following message was sent to both Arrian and Cort Haus.
The settler intended or Ciao 4441 has indeed been redirected to another site. Since we paid 132g for the barracks in Silkfest, should we just call that payment for the 4 tech points we owe?
Since we'll have the advantage of suprise for the first part of the attack, I think a road through the jungle there can wait - the cats won't be needed for the first attack against that city (Bogolo or something like that is the name, iirc).
The tech planning should be related to our discussion with LL as closely as possible. It's possible they won't want an NDA if we offer something in exchange - land exploration rights, maps, something to that effect. Perhaps we could arrange a three-way chat with LL. Though, I am all for joint-tech research. Our efforts will have to be joint in order to catch up to the other continent, especially while we're fighting the war.

From Niessuh
quote:
I'm sure that my english is worse than yours, fortunately your citizens are humorous people so I expect they will enjoy my wrong speech.
The LL enjoy the nap!
We accept a NAP, forty turns maybe? starting from this turn (570 BC). We will maintain the most obsessed members away from your borders.
We are separated by a narrow stripe of sea between the ocean, so commerce is not possible until we could secure safer navigation. We have just one source of iron, but maybe we can go without it for some time in the far future if your needs are vital.
As far as we know, Cake or Death have Mysticism (since we encounter them six turns ago). We have been offering Polytheism to them but they reject our offers.
If you want construction you just have to give us 240 gold. This kind of pacts usually comes with the "non interchanging for twenty turns", but for some extra gold, 60? we could remove this restriction.
If you also want Myst, then Poly you just have to take its tech cost X 12 (48 and 144 gold) adding 5 and 30 gold for the freed interchanging.
We accept any combo of cash & pay per turn for anything
Final question: maps. We are not close to give our map, but it has a huge value. It has supposed a great effort to our nation. So if you could bring something of great value to us like the mystery of the love potion revealed, or so, we will bring our world maps to you
best wishes

So what does the team say.
I think we shoud buy construction with the +60g to give it to CoD quickly.
We should consider buying myst and poly too.
The NAP seems to be a good decision.
As for Iron. Well we will have to wait a long time to get it...
Their map is valuable and they know it. any chance that anyone from you knows about the secret of love potions?

[21:50:58] • Mode: (Kloreep) sets (+o Octavian_X)
[21:51:43] [@Octavian_X] Hello.
[21:52:05] [@Octavian_X] This game just keeps on getting more and more interesting.
[21:52:12] [@Kloreep] Yep
[21:52:27] [@Kloreep] We see you have contact with LL
[21:52:54] [@Kloreep] So you're almost in contact with all 6 I guess
[21:53:16] [@Kloreep] How are things on your continent?
[21:53:26] [@Octavian_X] oh, all's well so far.
[21:53:47] [@Octavian_X] We're behind you continent tech-wise, I believe.
[21:54:18] [@Kloreep] Yeah, our continent recently reached the MA
[21:54:45] [@Kloreep] I guess that's to be expected with 4 civs instead of 3
[21:54:46] [@Octavian_X] So, it's your fault those barbarian camps acted up.
[21:54:52] [@Kloreep] Heh
[21:55:05] [@Kloreep] Guilty as charged I guess
[21:55:06] [@Octavian_X] That's true,though.
[21:55:14] [@Kloreep] Hey, we didn't go first
[21:55:21] [@Octavian_X] We're all very interested in tech purchase.
[21:55:22] [@Octavian_X] heh
[21:55:57] [@Kloreep] And I think we'd be interested in selling tech
[21:56:51] [@Octavian_X] We've a good amount of gold in the ol' royal treasury. That's all we can really offer.
[21:58:11] [@Kloreep] Are the Monkey's and Izzardian's contacts for sale?
[21:58:18] [@Kloreep] I'm sure we'd be interested in those too.
[21:59:49] • Join: (Sharpe) (Sharpe@dhcp-0-7-e9-cf-5a-ad.cpe.mountaincable.net)
[21:59:50] [@Octavian_X] We'll talk about it. Dunno what our position on contact trading is - no one's asked us before.
[21:59:55] [Sharpe] Hi!
[22:00:14] • Mode: (Kloreep) sets (+o Sharpe)
[22:00:24] [@Kloreep] Have you talked with LL much?
[22:00:27] [@Kloreep] Or did they just get here too?
[22:00:46] [@Octavian_X] We're exchanging PMs every once in a while.
[22:00:51] [@Octavian_X] Hello Sharpe.
[22:01:12] [@Octavian_X] Discussing tech trades and such...
[22:01:34] [@Sharpe] ah i see
[22:02:03] [@Sharpe] The 2 continents are finally meeting eh?
[22:03:09] [@Octavian_X] Here's an idea - contact for contact. We give you Monkey and Izzardia's phone numbers, you give us those guys and Sunshine.
[22:03:29] [@Octavian_X] Of course, I'd have to consult my team further.
[22:03:33] [@Kloreep] So would I
[22:03:42] [@Sharpe] though it sounds reasonable
[22:03:48] [@Kloreep] Sounds good to me
[22:05:34] [@Octavian_X] Let's see...
[22:05:49] [@Octavian_X] I'd also like to talk you guys into signing a NAP with us.
[22:06:16] [@Kloreep] Again, I'd have to take it back to the team, but I see no reason not to
[22:06:37] [@Sharpe] we should admit that the two of us are nearly 40% of the active team
[22:06:44] [@Kloreep] Heh, true
[22:07:03] [@Sharpe] so if Kloreep and I agree on something , it is very likely to pass
[22:07:07] [@Kloreep] One more active member and we could sign it on the spot with unanimous agreement
[22:07:25] [@Octavian_X] I'm 25% of my active team.
[22:08:37] [@Octavian_X] And, one more question - what kind of prices would we expect to pay for something like Construction or Mysticism?
[22:08:49] [@Kloreep] I honestly can't say
[22:09:06] [@Sharpe] not much for Mysticism - given it is only 4 tech points
[22:09:27] [@Kloreep] It's certainly your market, though. I expect it would be pretty reasonable
[22:10:03] [@Octavian_X] Would the price be any higher if we asked that you guys didn't attach an NDA to it?
[22:10:31] [@Kloreep] Probably; since presumably you'd want to then sell it to monkey and izzardia?
[22:10:49] [@Kloreep] But I'm sure we could work a deal out
[22:11:24] [@Octavian_X] I just like to keep my options open.
[22:11:31] [@Sharpe] there is also the matter of polytheism - isn't that required for reaching the middle ages too ?
[22:11:44] [@Kloreep] Yep; Myst, Poly, Construction
[22:12:04] [@Kloreep] I think that's all you're missing, right?
[22:12:10] [@Octavian_X] Ironically, we've got a deal with Izzardia to get that.
[22:12:38] [@Sharpe] hmm, that is slightly ironic if you don't mind me saying so ...
[22:12:39] [@Kloreep] ?
[22:12:50] [@Kloreep] You mean all three?
[22:13:12] [@Sharpe] I suspect Octavian means Polytheism right?
[22:13:38] [@Sharpe] Monkey blowing any gaskets about trees and all yet?
[22:13:41] [@Octavian_X] Yes - it all works out with a trade that took place a long time ago.
[22:14:19] [@Octavian_X] They don't seem to mind the fact that we're close to eliminating all the forests in our territroy.
[22:15:08] [@Kloreep] Heh
[22:15:17] [@Kloreep] I forgot you had all those lumberjacks
[22:15:46] [@Octavian_X] It's best to keep them busy at all times.
[22:17:16] [@Sharpe] yeah
[22:17:43] [@Sharpe] or else they might feel the temptation to sing and wear dresses
[22:17:54] [@Sharpe] just like their papas...
[22:18:35] [@Octavian_X] Are you making fun of our national pasttime?
[22:18:46] [@Sharpe] nope
[22:19:15] [@Sharpe] though our national pasttime is food fights...
[22:23:14] [@Sharpe] so has everything been mostly peaceful on your continent so far?
[22:24:27] [@Octavian_X] Yes - it's all fun times, British humor, and poop throwing...
[22:25:26] [@Kloreep] hehe
[22:26:58] [@Kloreep] One question here: what's your policy on foreign galleys in your waters?
[22:28:14] [@Octavian_X] We don't mind. Just don't land and units in our territory, or move land units through it.
[22:28:38] [@Kloreep] k
[22:29:05] [@Kloreep] Will do
[22:29:10] [@Kloreep] Or would that be Will don't?
[22:30:54] [@Octavian_X] HA! We laugh at your atrocious grammer, you silly sons of a silly person!
[22:31:10] [@Octavian_X] Sorry, had to let that out...
[22:31:38] [@Kloreep] hehe
[22:34:48] [@Sharpe] how confident are you that your team would be willing to trade contacts re the other civs on each of our continents, Octavian?
[22:36:14] [@Sharpe] cause I notice that the turn order is currently - Tabemono, then MAST , then Sunshine then Python
[22:36:26] [@Octavian_X] Not very, to tell the truth. Some my object to the idea, some may not like it.
[22:37:10] [@Sharpe] ah k, I see
[22:37:39] [@Sharpe] who are the actives on your team ATM ?
[22:37:55] [@Sharpe] we have Kloreep, Zargon, Rhothaerill, Unorthodox and myself
[22:38:15] [@Sharpe] with some input from others occasionally
[22:38:59] [@Octavian_X] DaveMcW, SirRalph, and Darekill are really the only active people.
[22:39:20] [@Sharpe] I thought Sir Ralph was retiring from Demo games?
[22:39:58] [@Octavian_X] I expect his participation will bottom out. Hopefully, he'll still post every once in a while to help.
[22:40:23] [@Sharpe] ah ok
[22:40:56] [@Sharpe] anything else you want to discuss?
[22:49:51] [@Kloreep] ?
[22:50:45] [@Octavian_X] Sorry. distracted by other demogames.
[22:50:54] [@Octavian_X] Nothing so far as I can think of.
[22:51:16] [@Kloreep] k
[22:51:33] [@Kloreep] I'll take the contact trade proposal back to our forum
[22:51:48] [@Sharpe] k, I gtg then, nice chatting with you Octavian - nice to finally meet the Pythons and the other continent

In short:
They are interested in contact trading.
They may sell construction and mysticism for cash and w/o an NDA.
From Cort Haus:
quote: Maybe that's why LL were so keen to sell us a deal - they knew the Tabejin were on their way with the same merchandise!
NAP's have a bit of a bad name after the DG1, but we certainly want to keep outsiders out. Two questions : 1. Are you looking at a timeframe on the NAP? 2. Could it include non-settlement (including gifted cities) on respective continents? |

How about a public announcement? The world will figure it out anyway now that contacts are being traded. (This announcement assumes we go into anarchy now.)
Monty Python holds a Revolution!
***Breaking News***
Monty Python's anarcho-beaurocratic commune has been overthrown!
Peasants tired of paying granary tax, temple tax, army tax, research tax, luxury tax, and tax collector tax stormed the palace at Camelot. They took several government leaders prisonner, including our M.O.R.O.N Sir Ralph.
Revolutionary leaders declared Monty Python's offical government to be Anarchy. Citizens will never have to work or pay tax again!
Lumberjacks around the nation threw down their shovels and picks, refusing to build any more roads and mines. A group of men in dresses captured Monkey Ambassador DaveMcW at his beach house on the shores of Castle Anthrax, threatening his life if he did not stop cooperating with the primates.
OctavianX took advantage of the situation, expanding his powers from figurehead despot to designated player.
Darekill seized control of the army, and immediately began laying plans to invade the southern continent.
The remaining team members have gone into hiding, and are nowhere to be seen.

Heh, that sounds good to me. However, Arrian didn't like the idea of a public annoucment, mostly due to his bad experiences with them at GS in PTWDG1.
We'll just continue nonchalantly, and see what Monkey does.
EDIT: On second thought, I just sent a little, polite note with the save.

Got two PMs from Cort Haus. For one, it's CoD's official position that we not post any public annoucements that might be related to the war, as we've not yet met all the teams yet.
Second one concerned the war:
quote: Octavian X,
We didn't recieve the peace accepted. Maybe it doesn't work when sent with a RoP, so we'll send Peace accepted. Once you have that, try sending us the RoP accepted.
Monkey have declared war on us both - unless you declared on your turn. They have captured our scout, but will give us some war-joy which will be handy.
They have disbanded Bonobo - perhaps to send all their Numids South to defend their core. They may pillage the road on their way south to hole up with their GA pumping Numids. The CoD pillage team has left Plymouth (3 Spears 1 Horse in 2 Galleys) and will arrive near Pri Cent, if unimpeded, around T105/106.
We will be sending 4 upgraded horses south on the war road on our next turn, T102, for the attack on Mandrill, so please hold your sword at Swindon-7 to enable passage - thanks.
Regards,
Cort. |

To Cort Haus:
quote: Cort Haus,
I could have sworn the Peace-RoP worked. We will resent RoP accepted.
We didn't declare war on them, though their disbanding tactic suprised me. We'll likely simply continue south after the road through the jungle is completed, so the catapults can come with us.
We also recieved the following message from conmcb25 of the Monkeys.
quote: "We give our congratulations to Python,
You sudden intent to invade our nation has really caught us by surprise. We
have been studying the save, and believe there will be very little good to
come out of your impending attack for either team.
It is therefore time to negotiate.
What can we give you to allow us to live quietly on our little peninsula?
Please take our offer seriously.
We believe that both of our teams have been outplayed and outsmarted by CoD.
Obviously they have promised a land of gold for your palace jump... clearly,
you can see our territory is just as bad as yours and probably even worse.
We on the other hand, were promised a 3 way tech alliance which was now an
obvious sham & lie to ensure we are relatively unprepared for war.
We have both been suckered in. CoD sist in a perfectly centralized position
on our continent, and make its two neighbors war on their behalf. We are
foolish to follow that path.
What we suggest is that Team Monkey submits fealty to Team Python. Allow us
to live on our peninsulas, and the rest of the continent is yours. Our
economy will be thrown open for your benefit.
This offer is made to your Team only. We see no need and have no desire to
give CoD anything.
We suspect there maybe a back stab from CoD in your future. They do have the
best position on this continent and do have a commanding Tech lead. If you
should decide to call this attack off we would be more than willing to
assist you in any possible action against the real enemy in the middle,
after all your army is right there, get the rest of the catapults from CoD
and just shift your forces.
Again, please take this offer seriously.
Given our poor territory start, we never believed ourselves capable of being
a superpower on our continent. Our plan was to always try to partner up with
Python and split the continent. I'm sure you began detecting that from our
latest PM's to your ambassadors. We are willing to offer just about anything
to stop this war.
We are willing to listen to any offers, demands or ultimatums.
Your willing servants
The Monkeys.
By the way until you actually attack us we still wish you some of the most
beautiful shrubberies you can imagine. " |
What do you think? My own opinion is that we demand that they leave the continent if they want to avoid war.
And, lastly, we will likely begin a revolution this upcoming turn (T102).
~Octavian X |
Aslo, what do you guys think about proposing NAPs with LL and Tabejin? Terms would be something like: lasts 40 turns, no settlement, promise to stay out of our continental affairs. Sound good?

From Tabejin's Unorthodox:
quote: Greetings from team Tabemono!
Kloreep is a bit busy this week and has asked that I meet with you reguarding some potential deals between our two peoples.
Now, is there a time our schedules allow for a chat? Personally, I can be online to chat after 10:30 PM EST each evening, OR from 1:30-4:00 AM EST each morning. However, this is often difficult for most folks, and if that is the case, PM's will have to do.
First of all I will address the matter of Mysticism that you requested. At present, we offer it for 50 Gold with a No-trade clause of 20 turns or 90 Gold without that same no-trade clause.
Second is the matter of the Non Aggression Pact. This is an agreeable deal for the people of Tabemono. A no-brainer really considering our respective locations. However, to formalize I would propose that we set this up for a 50 turn duration at the end of which we both are allowed to evaluate and re-sign as we see fit. However, this is just personal suggestion and the team may see fit to sign a longer term all at once if you so desire.
Third is the matter of Contacts. We would readily accept a contact - for - contact deal. I would suggest that this be done by the mutual sending the contacts accepted instead of waiting for the counter-offer. If this is agreeable. If not, then waiting an additional turn for the process is not that great a deal of importance.
Fourth, and finally, we come to the potential for trading of maps. Right now there is mild debate as to whether we are prohibited from trading world maps due to a previous deal at the moment. However, I can tell you that we have our full island mapped with the trading of world maps from all nations. Has map-sharing been equally receptive in your part of the world? Do you also have a complete map of your landmass? If so, I believe a WM for WM deal will most likely be agreeable on Tabemono's side. If not, then perhaps a territory for territory?

A 50 turn NAP sounds good to me, at least. I'd like to add conditions preventing settlment of the other continent, as well as a general prohibition on interfering with intercontinental affairs (You don't mess with us, we won't mess with you).
Contact for Contact, to me, sounds ok. But, just like the tech purchase, we have to talk about it some more.
We do have a map of our entire continent, and map trading goes around every once in a while in an attempt to find barb camps. For us, if at all, we'd lean toward a territory-territory trade in regard to maps.

So Monkey think this was CoD's idea ... I don't know whether you want to put them straight about that
Where might they leave the continent for? Their little horsey island for an OCC? I doubt we want another civ vasselising them on another continent, but they might be able to put up a fight in their core. However, the fact that they are offering to roll over for Python suggests they're not too confident.
I don't have time for further analysis right now - and we need Arrian's input. All I can suggest is to stall them, while considering vasselising them on the southern ice as a commerce-slave while Python settle peacefully - or even better take the cities. They probably want a Monkey-Python deal with CoD dead though.
I'll fwd you Monkey's message to CoD, with my reply.

And, this is the message CoD got Monkey:

Hey Arrian,
As you know, Monkey is up for some very interesting times over the next few turns.
Given our small membership, and lack of micromanagement expertise, I contacted Dominae to see if he would want to join our team as a "consultant" for the next few turns.

Little did I know, that he did the same for CoD earlier in the game.
Anyway. Dom said he would love the challenge as I presented it to him, but did say he knew of CoD's territory and general city location.
I assume it was a while ago, because he did not seem to know that Monkey was your friendly neighbour and tech aliance partner from the south.
Given that we have your map, and your city locations already, would you object to us having Dominae on our side for a few turns....just to make it interesting.
Personally, I think it would be kinda cool. He is a mercenary for hire. Jumping to any team who needs him.

But if you guys have any serious objections, (other than you just not wanting us to have an expert player on our team) then we of course understand.
Waiting with anticipation....while tossing a great lump of week old monkey poo in your direction.

Hey H_E,
Sir, you yourself are a highly respected player in the community, with a strong reputation both as an economic planner and military operative. Monkey also have other very experienced DG-ers onboard, and CoD itself is a very small team.
Thank-you very much though for asking us about Dom's role as a possible consultant to Monkey. Arrian (who is away this week) would have to be party to our response, and it is possible that the interesting idea of consultants working for more than one team is a matter for public discussion.
So I must ask that we hang on to this particular piece of monkey poo for a few days before returning it, as the skeleton staff of one at CoD this week is not in a position to respond alone.
Regards,
Cort.
