P.J. McQuinn:

  • How ever I feel that a lot of the mods you talk about can already happen by modifing the rules.txt.

Miguelito:

  • First, an observation: Civ and Civ2 are already terrific games, with qualities as both games and simulations. Many suggestions for future versions are poorly considered, favoring one play style at the expense of another, or asking unrealistic performance from the program. One example is to include even more military units added to a roster which already seems overstocked to us quiet builders.

  • Future improvements must directly address whether they're intended to enrich the historic simulation of Civ, streamline play, or just provide more types of explosions for the adolescents out there. Often, improvements to the Civ as a game will harm Civ as a simulation, and vice versa; for example, a larger map would enhance realistic geography, but as that map fills up with cities, the game would grind to a standstill as the player micromanages hundreds or even thousands of cities.

  • Nonetheless, many of the suggestions you've displayed on your web page are quite good. I like suggestions of canals, dirtier nukes, abstract benefits for future tech, and restricting stolen techs to those a rival has prerequisites for, especially.

Lee Chase multi-player maestro:

  • Oh and one other thing in Civ and Civ II there is far too much micro management going on, e.g. like trying not to waste shields by producing more than you need for a unit. When the unit is finnished the production should add on to the next unit or what ever it is you wish to build.

Richard Melanson:

  • Civilization III should have the option to view a replay of the game that includes time lines and maps like the ones found in history text books.

Robert Breiten:

  • I also think that their should at least be 2 CD-ROM this time around. One for all basic game files, units, sound files, scenarios, maps, and leave the other for live video improved back ground music advances and so on...

Gunnar Franz:

  • The diplomatic sceens with the animated historical leaders smiling or frowning at you with ther time-appropriate surounding were much much better than the pathatic dancers acting as some ridiculous "diplomats" in civ2. The introduction video fails to set the stage for the game. The 3d city views supposed to be realistic are far less facinating than the old artistic representations with their running water, fountains etc. And they are not very realistic either, and not time -corresponding. Generally you get little value for the 16 MB needed to see the videos, but those showing the real wonders of the world are pretty beautiful, OK, but unnecessary time-consuming. In peace time civ1 was less boring, since you had the option of seeing your cities, or rather the improvments, grow beautifully, and adjust to the era. And the demonstrating inhabitants are gone, too, replaced by a Bastille picture right from 5000 BC!

Christopher Fowler:

  • I would also like to see more individualism between the different civilizations. Each culture had their own unique art and architecture styles. Civ II made a good step in the right direction by allowing different building styles but I feel more can be done.

  • I am defintiely in favor of continuing a very good idea from Civ II. The feature allowing customization of rules was welcome. This tool would allow Civ III designers to put in all manner of new ideas without having to worry about upsetting the purists too much. After all, its your game and you should be able to play the way you want.

  • Certain civilizations that had a tremendous impact on the real world were left out of all versions of the game. I'm some of these cultures are "hidden" within Civ and Civ II but the omission of peoples such as the Arabs, the Hittites, the Mayans and the Ottomans (to name a few) is an oversight that should be corrected. I for one think that the texture and variety of the game would be enhanced by the addition of more cultures.

  • I liked the simple animations in the first Civilization. It was fun to watch the waves lap against the shore and rivers flow. I would appreciate those simple things in the next version.

  • Allow players to name things like mountain ranges, oceans and rivers. There is a lot of empty unused space on the map and having things named would break up the monotony.

Saad:

  • In civ II, the moving of the unit such as military units, settler is not realistic. How about make it in civ III. Each unit should have more than one style, I mean let's take for an example a settler. If we move it to an other place, it will walk not just skip for square to another square with same shape just like in civ II. And if we order it to build something (road, railroad, etc.) it will move as it was building something.

T. Jobbins:

  • The ability to handle long file names (I reckon they could add this to Civ2 on a future update easily)

Sean M. Punch:

  • I agree that your reputation should affect your final score. It seems odd to me that if you devastate the globe, overrun it with troops and break treaties every turn, your score is often *higher* than if you play a peaceful game.

  • Make your bank balance affect your final score, as per Colonization.

H.M.:

  • I like the new trade ideas in Civ II, but they can be (are) a real pain in a large game. Can the computer handle them in some auto mode?

  • The map generator likes to make small islands or fill the whole map with land. What I would like to see is a world like earth, 4 large land mass, and lots of water.

Cor Smal:

  • In CIV1 there was a replay at the end of the game. I allways enjoyed watching it (the map especially). I want that back in civ3.

AcqirdTast:

  • One thing that rather annoys me about civII, which I'd like to see remedied in civIII, is the fact that you can customize units, BUT THE PICTURES DON'T MATCH THE IDEA. That is, I want to design, say, a ZSU anti-aircraft system (think of a Vulcan Close-In Weapon System, like on US Navy ships, set on wheels). Unfortunately, lacking space on my computer for a generalist program, not to mention the lack of money, I have to settle for the default. Also, one other annoying thing which just cropped up recently (I think....), is that you go to all the problem of setting up a perfectly fair world, utilizing all the resources as you desire, and then the program randomizes their locations...... Now, I'm pretty sure that the program earlier was giving me the option of randomizing the resources (just as it still gives me a chance to randomize player starting locations), but it's not anymore.... Anyways, keep up the good work.

By D. Credé:

  • Maybe it would be fair that also your status of your reputation can influence your highscore... (Why not? I was always "fair", but my AI opponets weren't; so, why should I be fair if I won't be rewarded for that?).
